Exponential Growth in Chess Money Game

1) The scenario describes a gambler offered a choice between $10 million or doubling the amount of money placed on each successive chess square. This models exponential growth as the amount doubles each time rather than a linear increase. 2) The appropriate equation is y=2n, where y is the amount of money and n is the square number, since the amount doubles (is multiplied by 2) with each new square. 3) A table of values from n=1 to 6 and the corresponding y values (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32) illustrates the exponential doubling of the amount with each new square.

Exponential Functions Project

1. Create a real life scenario for an exponential function.

A gambler confronted a wealthy millionaire to play a game of chess. The millionaire offer a
choice of prizes, he offer the gambler 10 million dollars or take 1 dollar and placed it on the
chess player. The gambler said, he would double the amount of money on each square moving
down to the last squared

If you are chess player would you take the ten million or the last amount of square?
a. Explain why the scenario is an exponential function (why is the scenario not linear?).

Exponential function is a mathematical function of the following form: f ( x )=ax , where the x is
the variable and a is the constant called the base of function. This means, something always
grow in relation to its current value, such as always doubling.
2. Create/Find an appropriate equation for the scenario. Explain why this is an appropriate
equation.

y=2n

For each square, it’s 2n starting with n=1

Where the n is the number of the square

Where y is the amount of the money

3. Create a table for the scenario containing at least 6 values.

X(Number of Square) Y(Amount of Money)

1 2
2 4
3 8
4 16
5 32
6 64
4. Identify the characteristic of your exponential function

Independent variable: x-axis

Dependent variable: y-axis

Domain: 1 ≤ x ≤6

Range: 1 ≤ x ≤64

Growth: y-value
4. Students create a graph for the scenario plotting at least 6 points. Clearly stating the title
and labelling the axes.

6. Provide an Interpretation of the graph.

The graph is taken from the amount of money in the chess piece squares. At 1 square,
there was zero dollars. Between 2 and 3 square, there was less than 10 dollars. A spike
occur at square 3 and square 4. The number of cases starts to grow rapidly
