Good Day everyone, in this next video, we will be discussing management and its process.

First, let us define what is management, management is the creative problem-solving process of planning,
organizing, leading, and controlling an organizations resources and objectives. That means that
management is concerned with the overall function of an activity.

Starting from planning, we tend to identify set of questions in doing an activity such as how are we going
to do the activity? when are we gonna do it? And What are the different ways of doing it? This questions
allow us to do effective planning. It allows us to identify what are the resources we need to be able to
manage an entity. In this course, we shall be discussing detailed planning in management.

After planning, we will then be doing organizing. In organizing, we tend to form an organization where
we will be using different types of resources to be able to manage our entity effectively. In management,
resources such as manpower is a good way to delegate task which you are not effective at. Thru this, we
could focus on what is more important, and delegate other task to other members of the group.

Resources in an organization should be manage effectively. To do this, we should lead them effectively.
People tend to have different attitude and styles, therefore, as an effective leader, we should be able to
adjust as to what are their needs and wants. However, we should always think that giving them what they
need should not let them compromise what is the real objective of the company.

The last management process would be controlling. There are several ways on how are we going to
effectively control the performance of our organization. To be able to do this, we should communicate
clearly the objectives of the company so that the company culture thinks onerous as to what is the goal
of the company.

Next, let us identify what are the requirements for an engineer managers job. According to Roberto
Medina, in his book engineering management, a person should have his bachelor’s degree. In some cases,
a master’s degree in engineering, or business management is a must. Although he says that reputable
school Is a must, I don’t think that it is required. It is still safe to say, that attitude works best than the
school you graduated from.

A few years of experience in a pure engineering job, should also be required. It is really hard to manage
what you don’t understand or haven’t tested yet. In engineering, we are more of a technical type of
person, where we use our knowledge and experience to decide effectively.

A training under the supervision of someone who is more experienced than us is also a good choice. When
we are still under training, we lessen our mistakes by learning from the experience of others who are
already ahead of us.

Special Training in engineering management is also a plus, management trainings allows us to have
different sets of tools to manage our organization or activity effectively.

So, how do one may become a successful engineering manager?


First is that you must have the ability, meaning you must have different sets of skills such as the technical
and managerial skills to effectively organize a unit in an organization. We could have this skills by
constantly improving ourselves and focus on what is our specific task.

Then, We should have also the motivation to manage. in an organization, a person who isn’t motivated to
manage is contagious. Meaning, the person who shows no compassion to what he leads, could make the
downfall of the organization.

Opportunity, for me is one of the most important element, meaning if you have the ability but still doesn’t
have the opportunity to manage, then it would still make no sense to identify what are you going to
manage. However, in today’s time, we have lots of ways on searching for opportunities to become an
engineering manager.
