Chapter 9-Measurement and Data (March 12th)

Lesson 9.2: Indirect Measurement

Standard: CC.2.4.1.A.1 Order lengths and measure them both indirectly and
by repeating length units.

Learning objective: Students will be able to measure indirectly using the


Transitivity Principle.

Essential question: How can you compare lengths of three objects to put
them in order?

Materials: Student edition, teacher edition, pencils, smart board

Procedures:

1. The teacher will pose the essential question.


2. The teacher will use objects around the room and ask student
questions such as which object is longer? Which is shorter? How do you
know?
3. The teacher will prompt table helpers to pass out the math books and
everyone will turn to page 519.
4. The teacher will review Listen and Draw with the students on the
board and read each clues at the top of the page.
5. The teacher will walk through each clue and draw the strings.
6. The teacher will review Model and Draw with the students on the
board using the clues on the page.
7. The teacher will review Share and Show with the students on the
board posing several questions and having us do it all together.
8. The students will then complete the On Your Own portion of the
lesson. The teacher will walk around to assess student progress.
9. After completing the on your own portion the students will place their
math books on the back table and those who finish early will start the
formative assessment.
10. For the formative assessment the students will be given a bag
with three different colored pieces of yarn all different lengths.
11. The students will have to determine which piece of string is the
shortest, which is in the middle, and which is the longest.
12. Homework will be assigned the next day based on the formative
assessment and if re-teaching is needed.
