Classroom Design Assignment

1. Desks: When arranging the desks, I thought about the many classrooms I have been
in, and what desk set up worked best for me when I was teaching. I decided to
arrange 16 desks into groups of 4 because I have always felt that group desks are
really helpful for students. They are great when doing group work, and students in
different ability levels can be placed together and help each other when needed. I
have 6 single desks around those groups for the students that do better on their
own, and would not learn well sitting in a group.

2. Tables: I decided to place the whole group table near the windows because I feel
like that would be a large enough space for whole group time. It would also give me
enough room to put extra materials (bins) beside the table and in front of the
windows. I put the table in front of the chalkboard, because I have seen this in other
classrooms before and I think it is a great idea to have in front of the classroom to
place things on for the students to come and take. It is also nice for me as the teacher
to be able to have my lesson plan on the table or notes to look at.

3. Carpet: I added a carpet to the room because I think carpets are great for the
students to sit on. They are great for circle time, calendar, and even watching
something on the board up close.

4. Student mailboxes: I think student mailboxes are essential for a classroom.

Students always have a lot of papers that need to go home, so they are perfect to
have in the classroom so that the papers can be organized. I decided to put these
near the door so that they students won’t forget to grab their papers before going
home.

5. Teacher desk: I put the teacher desk in the left bottom corner of the room. The
reason why I did this is because I felt like it was the best place and had the biggest
amount of space for the teacher to have their own area.
