Competency #1: Self Awareness and Development- Personal Values
Personal values are aspects that each person holds very highly in their life and make them who they are at their core. I learned my top 5 values (hope, humor, kindness, teamwork, and zest) in HDF 190 through the VIA assessment. Throughout the semester, I have reflected on how I use my values in several situations. I have had discussions in my class group about each of our unique values, as well as written about the use of all top 5 values in a few outcomes. It is important to know your personal values as a nurse because then you can figure out how you can best help patients. For example, most of my top 5 values revolve around my positive and upbeat energy. I can help a patient by bringing motivational and optimistic energy. It is also important to know other nurses/staff’s values in order to effectively give the best care to a patient.
Collaboration entails working with others to strive toward a purpose by using group member’s strengths/values. I learned how to truly collaborate with group members in HDF 190 with my class group. I feel like collaborate effectively because during this semester, we have discussed many times that using individuals’ values and strengths to the greatest potential in a group can lead the group to be beyond successful and work efficiently. Through projects and activities, my FLITE group has gotten to know each others’ strengths and use them in assessments like the social change project. Collaboration is another important aspect of nursing. As a nurse, I will work with a team of other professions that include physicians, paramedics, social workers, and other nurses. In order to give a patient the best care possible, it is our job as professionals on a team to communicate and collaborate with one another to create a plan of care. This includes knowing each other's strengths and using them to their greatest potential. For example, if another nurse has a strength of communicating with patients and simplifying medical lingo, then I would use their strength in that area.
Competency #3: Civic Responsibility- Service
Service is helping others to better a community. I learned about service in HDF 190, through the Servant Leadership Model, coined by Robert Greenleaf. I feel like I have an understanding of service through my servant leadership speech in HDF 190. In this speech, I detailed the aspects of Greenleaf’s model and how servant leadership can be applied to my future career. In class, my FLITE group also have had discussions on servant leadership experiences and its importance. In general, nursing entails helping others get re-established and/or improve their health. This places sole value on a patient’s health improvement, not on myself. As a nurse, my patient’s needs are my first priority and I will need to use active listening and empathy to give the best care possible.
