How cities may change in the future notes.

- For Cities like Vancouver and Vancouver itself it will continue to see an increase in public
transit, more busses, trains, subways, and trams. As more and more people use public
transit as cities get denser.
o Moore money will be put into public transportation and other forms of
transportation besides cars.
o Many young people choose to take public transit
- Vancouver is currently densifying and will continue to densify.
o We see this all-around Oakridge mall and around SkyTrain stations, where
several properties are turned into condos and mid-rise apparent buildings.
o All over the city there will continue to densify.
o More and more mid-rise apartments and town houses will make the city denser
and increase the population.
- Vancouver has very expensive housing and it’s hard for many people to afford to live
here.
o increase in social housing, and co-op housing so that there are affordable places
for people to live.
o
- Cities will become more sustainable
o Buildings and facilities will focus more on being sustainable with energy and
waste
o Zero-waste will become more prevalent.
o More electric cars, and more electric car charging spots around Vancouver
o Increased use in Car share programs decreasing the number of cars owned
o More cycling and walking decreasing greenhouse gasses
o Green buildings to help with carbon dioxide.
- Making more public spaces
o There will be more green spaces/ multi use spaces that are outdoors
o More walking space will encourage more people to get outside and explore the
city.
o Creates more tourist destinations
- Increased size in sidewalks
o In busy areas of cities to make it safe to pedestrians make sidewalks bigger and
include bike lanes
o This may increase the number of cyclist and pedestrians decreasing the number
of cars on the streets.
- Schools
o The teachers may move around the school instead of the students changing
classrooms
o Schools could leave test behind complete teaching their students in a different
way.
- More work could be done from home in the future
o There may be a shorter work week, but people would just work from home some
days and come in other days.
