Geometry - Estimating Areas

Instructions:

Construct a circle of known diameter.

Divide the circle in half.

The formula for the equation of a circle on a coordinate plane (centered at the origin) is

2 2 2
x + y =r

where x and y represent a coordinate (x,y) and r represents the radius of the circle.

Estimate the area of the half circle using rectangles. Use at least 16 rectangles but more is
better.

Calculate the area of the whole circle from the area you estimated with a half circle. Create
a data table on Google Sheets to do your calculations.

Compare it to the area of the circle you get from the equation for the area of a circle.

Please turn in on 11x17 or larger sheet of paper. Show all calculations. Include your table.
