Preparation
Before achieving data turn off compound imaging and select a dynamic range, that
increases the image contrast and suppresses low level signals. Adjust the B-Mode
image for best contrast.
The better the contrast, the better the 3D-image will be.

Scanning technique
To achieve a 3D-image, you must scan the object you want to display. You must
scan the whole region in one sweep. Always keep the probe perpendicular to the
scanning surface and linearly move the probe in a constant speed.

Before you start the scanning sweep, press [FREEZE] to empty the cine memory.
Press [FREEZE] again, to return to the live image and start the scanning sweep.
When you have reached the end of the region you want to scan, press [FREEZE]
again.

To convert and store the achieved data, press [SAVE] followed by [3]. Now the
Cygnus CD suggests a name for the 3D-data file. You may alter the name or accept
the suggested on by pressing [SET].

After having pressed [SET] the 3D-data will be calculated and displayed in the 3D-
Mode screen. (See Illustration 1 on page 3)

Illustration 1

The 3D image screen is divided into two main regions.

On the left side you find:

The size indicator (A on Illustration 1)
The option menu (B on Illustration 1)
The image manipulation menu (C on Illustration 1).

On the right side of the screen you will find four images:
Image 1 in the left upper corner shows planes defined by X- and Y-axis.
Image 2 shows the planes defined by Y- and Z-axis
Image 3 shows the planes defined by X- and Z-axis.
Image 4 shows the calculated 3D image.

Illustration 1 shows a scan of a ultrasound phantom. Illustration 2 on page 4 shows a

schematic view of the scan above. The probe has been moved along the Z-Axis.

Rotate / Zoom the 3D image

You may rotate and zoom the calculated 3D image as follows:

Rotate
Use the trackball to move the arrow into the lower right image. Then press and hold
[SET]. Now rotate the trackball to tilt the 3D image.

Zoom
If you press and hold the [SEL] key you can zoom in and out the 3D image by
rotating the trackball.

Select the region of interest in the 3D-image.

You may select a certain region that shall be displayed as a 3D-image. To do so, you
need to move and resize the rectangular ROI cursors in X-, Y- and Z-image view.

Move a ROI cursor

To move a ROI cursor, use the trackball to move the arrow into the desired ROI
cursor then press and hold [SET], rotate the trackball to move the ROI cursor to the
desired location. When the ROI cursor is in place release the [SET] key.

Resize a ROI cursor

To change the size of a ROI cursor, use the trackball to move the arrow into the ROI
cursor, then press [SEL] and rotate the trackball to change the size of the ROI cursor.
Whenever you have changed the size and/or position of a ROI cursor, select "Update
ROI.

Display the selected area

If you have set all three ROI cursors, press "Crop" in the option menu. Now all areas
not within the boundary of the selected ROI cursor, will be cut away.
You may rotate and/or zoom the cropped 3D-ROI as described above.
If the 3D-ROI shows the desired information, select "Save Volume" in the option
menu to store the selected volume. If you do not see all of the desired information,
select "Crop" again, to return to the uncut, complete 3D-image.

Change Z-axis scale

Depending on the speed you move the probe the Z-axis may be stretched or jolted.
To correct this you need to change the Z Scale. Use the UP and DOWN key to select
"Z Scale" in the image manipulation menu. If you have highlighted the option us the
LEFT and RIGHT keys to increase / decrease the Z-Scale. If you have moved the
probe to slow you need to increase the Z Scale and vice versa.

Change the opacity of the calculated 3D Image

Use the UP / DOWN keys to select "Opacity Offset" in the image manipulation menu.
Change the value with the LEFT / RIGHT keys. The larger the value the more
opaque the 3D image will appear.
The option "Opacity Slope" can be changed to change the overall distribution of
opacity level in the 3D image.

Radius
The "Radius" function is unused in this software version.

Clear ROI / Restore ROI
The 3D image may show unwanted "bubbles" or white surfaces. Select "Clear ROI"
to remove these artifacts. If you cleared accidentally any useful information, select
"Restore ROI" to undo the changes.

Full Screen
Select "Full screen" to display a bigger sized 3D image. The X-, Y- and Z-view
images will be replaced by a larger 3D-Image. You may rotate and/or zoom the 3D-
image in full screen mode.

Hide ROI
Select "Hide ROI" if you want to suppress the colored ROI boundaries.

Save Image
Select "Save Image" to store the displayed image on the Cygnus CD internal
harddisk.

Print
Select "Print" to print out a copy of the displayed image.

Quit
Select "Quit" to return to the preset screen. Make sure you have saved any useful 3D
image before pressing "Quit":
