Backgrounder

Hooters started out as an idea over drinks by six businessmen in 1983, and not
even a year later the first location opened in Clearwater, Florida. The men wanted a
restaurant that pushed the boundaries while providing a fun atmosphere and great
food. It was also important to the founders to be more than just a restaurant, and to be
an active part of their community and give back. Almost 40 years later and the
Hooters brand has expanded to more than those 6 men ever dreamed of. There are
now over 420 Hooters Restaurants across 29 different countries. Hooters also has an
airline, a race car, and is recognized worldwide by the famous owl logo. Despite the
tremendous success the company has had, it still puts the same value on giving back
that it did in 1983.

Terrence Marks, CEO of Hooters of America, has been with the company since
2002, and in his current position since 2011.. His main focuses have always been
customer and employee care, as well as giving back specifically regarding breast
cancer research. He has been directly affected by breast cancer with the loss of his
mother and sister in law, and that passion shows through in every initiative he is a
part of. He worked hand in hand to create the “Give a Hoot” foundation, which has
now raised over 5.8 Million dollars for breast cancer research.

The “Give a Hoot” foundation is Hooters latest effort to donate to breast cancer
research. The campaign started in honor of the late Kelly Jo Down, an original Hooters
calendar girl in 1995. She passed away after a five year battle with breast cancer in
2007, but during her fight she became an advocate to hooters girls all over the country
about early detection and preventative measures. The “Give a Hoot” initiative has
been a priority to the company, and this shows from the various events and proceeds
pledges year round.

became the general manager of the Palm Harbor location. Only months after her starting this

gives 100% of proceeds to breast cancer research, and the funding of breast cancer exams to

women who can not afford them to The . The company also directly donated 2 million dollars in

her name. Her battle, and leadership has inspired generations of Hooters Girls, as well as others.
