Chandni Chowk

Set inside the walled city of Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk is an old bustling marketplace. It has
the oldest and most popular restaurants and confectioners called ‘halwais’. Delhi Metro has
made it possible for many locals to travel in and around Chandni Chowk and sample its lip-
smacking flavours. It is undoubtedly the best place to taste authentic chaats. Natraj Dahi
Bhalle Wale was established in 1940. It serves popular Delhi-style chaats like the popular
‘bhallas’. If you want to get your hands on typical Punjabi food laden with butter and cream,
this is the place to be! Pundit Gaya Prasad Shiv Charan Parathe Wala has been making pure-
ghee parathas since 1872! It is located in a narrow lane of Kinare Bazaar. Delhi’s best mithais
can be found at Ghantewala Confectioners, Chaini Ram Sindhi Confectioners and Tewari
Bros.

. Khan Market

Located in the heart of Delhi next to India Gate, Khan Market is one of the plushest areas of
the city. It is the shopping hub of New Delhi. Sure enough, many restaurants have
mushroomed here offering various types of cuisines. But old school kababs are still sought-
after by tourists and locals visiting this place. Khan Chacha’s Kabab Corner pulls crowds
thronging for the chicken and mutton rolls which are ‘to die for’. Vegetarians also have many
options on the menu. Another popular kabab place is Salim’s Kabab. If you have a sweet
tooth, try the stuff at The Big Chill and Café Turtle.

Connaught Place

Connaught Place is a swish industrial area in Delhi. If you want to try something other than
chaats and local specialities, Connaught Place is the way to go. Sarvana Bhavan is probably
the most popular restaurant in this area. It serves excellent South-Indian foods and thali. If
you’re in mood of something continental, try Q’BA. Choose from Italian, Indian, Chinese
and Thai cuisines. Connaught Place has many other multi-cuisine restaurants like Rodeo and
Zen. Another must-try is United Coffee House. Situated near the largest shopping & business
centre, it attracts many tourists and working professionals.

Greater Kailash

Fondly referred to as GK, this South-Delhi area has many residential colonies, designer stores
and modern retail outlets. Sure enough, many swanky restaurants have opened doors to the
upmarket crowds here. If you want to wine and dine, drive down to Diva in Greater Kailash
II. With a well stocked wine bar, Italian gourmet meals and plush interiors, this restaurant
makes for a fine dining experience. GK II has something for Mexican food lovers. Amigo
serves authentic quesadillas, tacos and nachos. For a delectable Mediterranean fare, head to
Shalom in GK I. And for good ol’ butter chicken and tandoors, dine at Moti Mahal in GK I.
Defence Colony

Defence Colony is yet another upscale area of South Delhi and houses some of the best
restaurants serving some of the most exceptional foods. Take wood-fired pizzas and salmon
salad at Flavors, or a complete costal treat at Swagath Restaurant. Vegetarians can dine at
Sagar while kabab lovers can indulge at Colonel’s Kebabz. There’s something for every taste
bud here!

SAms caffe-paharganj

Travelers seem to love it here but the ongoing popularity of Sam’s Café is quite puzzling. It must
be due to the Cafe's attractive rooftop garden setting, because it certainly can’t be for the service
or food (although rumor has it that the western breakfasts are quite good). Service is very slow
and the food, once it finally arrives, isn’t particularly appealing. The Café serves a variety of Israeli
and Italian food, as well as steak and burgers. There’s also barbecue from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
nightly.

Diamond Cafe

Decorated with striped orange and white walls, and pictures of Hindu gods, the Diamond Cafe is
another place that offers everything from Indian to Israeli food. Most of what's on the menu costs
less than 100 rupees ($2.50) and is quite appetizing. You'll usually have to call for the waiter's
attention, and will have to write your own order. Waiters will also bring beer if you ask.

• Address: 5066 Main Bazaar, Paharganj, Delhi (opposite the Vivek

Hotel). Ph: 9810818456 9810818456 .

• Cost: 200 rupees ($5) for two people.

1. Shree Balaji Chaat Bhandar

www.flickr.com user Charles Haynes

If the sign of a good place to eat is its popularity with the locals, then this shop has to be one of
the best places for chaat in Old Delhi. Its decor is average but it serves up an incredible variety of
delicious snacks. Adventurous eaters must try it.

• Address: 1462, Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. Ph: 23280579

• Opening Hours: Midday until 10 p.m.

with boiled potatoes, boiled chick peas, chilis, yoghurt and tamarind
chutney).

2. Bishan Swaroop
www.flickr.com user kspoddar

Bishan Swaroop can be challenging to find but is definitely worth the effort. It's hidden away in
one of Chandni Chowk's unruly side streets, which helps it retain an old-world feel. There's only a
few items on the menu, but what this place makes, it makes well.

• Address: 1421, Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. Ph:

9818364070 9818364070 (mobile).
• Opening Hours: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

4. Prince's Paan & Chaat Corner

www.flickr.com user willsfca

This up-market place is perfect for those who want to sample Delhi's delicious street food but
aren't keen on venturing into the depths of Chandni Chowk. It's got a great following of expats
owing to its posh residential and shopping location, and strict hygiene standards.

chaat.

specialty here.

1. Metropolis Bar and Restaurant

Sharell Cook

The Metropolis Bar and Restaurant, located on the rooftop of the Metropolis Tourist Home, is
without a doubt the pick of the Paharganj eateries. It’s a little more costly than the rest -- main
meals average around 250 rupees ($6) -- but the quality and variety of food is a definite step up
from the usual suspects. Both Indian and western dishes are prepared. Service is friendly, fast,
and efficient. Reasonably priced alcohol is also served, including cocktails.

• Address: Metropolis Tourist Home, 1628 Main Bazaar, Paharganj, Delhi. Ph: (11) 2356-
1782 (11) 2356-1782 .
• Opening Hours: 8 a.m. until 11 p.m.
• Cost: 750 rupees ($18) for two people

2. Malhotra Restaurant

Sharell Cook

Malhotra is an intimate restaurant that serves good Indian and Continental food. Step inside and
you'll find seating for around 40 people, wooden and tiled walls, and lighting that sets the mood
nicely. Service is courteous but variable, and it tends to be better in the evenings than at other
times of the day. Sometimes a waiter will immediately come to take your order, but other times
it's possible to be left waiting for 10 minutes.
• Address: 1833-34 Laxmi Narain Street, Paharganj, Delhi (opposite
the Hotel Cottage Yes Please). Ph: (11) 2358-9371 (11) 2358-

• Opening Hours: 7 a.m. until 11 p.m.
• Cost: 200 rupees ($5) for two people.

3. Gem Bar and Restaurant

Sharell Cook

Surprisingly, in keeping with its name, the Gem Bar and Restaurant is quite a gem! This narrow,
relatively new place is modern and decorated in warm tones inside. Upstairs is popular for its wide
screen TV, which is much sought after for watching sport. Staff are attentive, and you'll find a wide
range of cuisine on the menu. If you simply feel like relaxing and having a drink, definitely come to
Gem. It can get crowded and noisy at times, but it's a decent place and one of the few in Pahaganj
that serves alcohol.

• Address: 1050 Main Bazaar, Paharganj, Delhi. Ph: (11) 2358-

8165 (11) 2358-8165 .
