EDUC 474 – Educational Management of Exceptional Students

Spring 2020
From the Director

Dear students and parents,

I am both eager and excited to get to know everyone involved in this band program! I
recently graduated with my bachelor’s degree in music education from Stetson University;
my primary instrument being percussion. I’ve always had a passion for music and people,
and I am lucky to be embarking on a journey that combines both those things. Our band
program’s mission statement includes training the students to be better servants to our
world, fostering a life-long appreciation and love for the arts, and hoping that regardless of
major, students continue to find avenues creating and sharing music with others. To
achieve this, I plan to find appropriate ways to establish and uphold our structure, which is
what will ultimately lead to our success and growth as a program. Hence, our rules and
procedures manual. This serves as a clear understanding between the teacher and student
about the expectations in our classroom. This will pave the path and allow us to maximize
our productivity and learning in class. I am not only teaching them to be musicians, but
better humans and contributors to our society as well. The students deserve the best
experience possible, which is the driving force behind my philosophy. Needless to say, I am
passionate and driven about what I do, so I hope I am granted a chance to share that. I am
looking forward to getting to know everyone this school year!

Policies and Procedures

Rehearsal Procedures
Rehearsal time is short and every moment must be used for actual rehearsal purpose.
Students will have three minutes after the bell rings to set up their instrument. If a student
has an issue meeting this requirement due to coming from a class that is too far away, they
are to discuss it with the director. Students who forget their instrument, music, and/or any
other necessary materials are subject receiving up to a zero on their daily participation
grade. The amount of point lost is up to the discretion of the director.

Procedures/Expectations
 Students set their backpacks in the designated area upon entering the room.
 Students look at white board to see what the rehearsal will consist of that given day.
 Students set up their own chair, stand, instrument, and any other equipment they
may need for the duration of the class period.
 Students are ready to begin three minutes after the bell rings.
 Students warm up individually for a few seconds to a minute.
 Students stop playing once director gets on the podium.
 Students actively listen while instruction is happening and/or when their peers are
talking/performing.
 Students come with their music prepared.
 Students give the hand signal if they want to get water/use the restroom and quietly
wait for the teacher to approve them leaving.
 Students raise their hands if they have questions.
 Students participate during class.
 Students put all their belongings away before they may leave the class.

Instrument Storage Room

 Refrain from entering if there is nothing for you to get.
 Refrain from socializing in there, this should be a quick in-and-out situation.
 This is a shared space, so it is everyone’s responsibility to keep it clean.

Attendance
Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class, before warm-ups. Principal players will
see who is missing in their sections, raise their hand if they have people missing, and tell
the director once they are called upon. This process should take about 30 seconds and the
rest of the ensemble is to be quiet and mentally preparing themselves for the rehearsal. If a
student is absent for the day, they will not lose participation points. However, if a student is
only absent for this class and not any other classes (a.k.a. skipping), they will receive zero
credit for their daily participation grade.
Tardies
Tardiness should be avoided if possible. A student is considered on time when they are
seated and ready to play three minutes after the bell rings. Even if a student is in the room,
if they are not sitting in the ensemble ready to play once the three minutes are up, they will
be marked tardy. Unexcused tardies will result in being able to receive up to half credit for
their daily participation grade.

Consequences
If students are being disruptive in class, they are subject to any of the school-wide
disciplinary actions (detention, referrals, etc.). The director will always give warning
(within reason) before going to a more severe consequence. If an individual is continuously
acting out, they should expect a parent phone call home from the director.

Rewards
Each ensemble (class period) is eligible for an in-class party at the end of each nine weeks.
The factors that will be accounted for are:
 Overall behavior of class
 Overall preparedness of class

The director will keep track of each class’ progress and will keep it displayed throughout
the year. The class who wins will get to vote on what kind of party they would like to have
(i.e. pizza party, video game party, potluck, etc.). The winner will also receive 5 extra credit
points to their overall grade for that quarter.
