1.0 GENERAL
1.1 Scope
1.1.1 This specification, together with the data sheets, covers the requirements for the design,
materials, nameplate marking, inspection, testing and shipping of heater tube skin
thermocouples and its accessories.
1.1.2 The related standards referred to herein and mentioned below shall be of the latest editions
ASME American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

1.1.3 In the event of any conflict between this standard specification, job specification/data sheets,
statutory regulations, related standards, codes etc. the following order of priority shall
govern:
a) Statutory Regulations
b) Job specifications / Data Sheets
c) Standard Specification
d) Codes and Standards
1.1.4 In addition to compliance to purchaser's specifications, vendors' extent of responsibility shall
include the following:
a) Purchaser's data sheets indicate the material for the sensing element. Alternate
superior material of construction shall also be acceptable provided vendor assumes
complete responsibility for the selected materials for their compatibility with the
specified fluid and its process conditions.
1.2 Bids
1.2.1 Vendor's quotation shall be strictly as per the bidding instructions to the vendor attached with
the material requisition.
1.2.2 Whenever a detailed technical offer is required, vendor's quotation shall include the
following:
a) Compliance to the specifications.
b) Whenever the requirement of detailed specification sheet for heater tube skin
thermocouples is specifically indicated, a detailed specification sheet for each item
shall be furnished, which shall provide the information regarding type,
construction, material of construction etc. of the heater tube skin thermocouples and
its mounting accessories. The material of specifications and units of measurement
for various parts indicated in the specification sheets shall be to the same standards
as those indicated in purchaser's data sheets.

c) Proven references for each offered model in line with clause 1.2.3 of this
specification.
d) A detailed write-up on the installation and welding procedures which shall also
include ASME or AWS specification for the welding rod required for welding the
offered skin thermocouple sheath to the heater tube as per the material specification
given in the data sheets.
e) Deviations on technical requirements shall not be entertained. In case vendor has
any valid technical reasons to deviate from the specified requirements, they must
include a list of heater tube skin thermocouples tag number wise, summing up all
the deviations from the purchaser's data sheets and other technical specifications
along with technical reasons for each of these deviations.
f) Catalogues giving detailed technical specifications, model decoding details and
other related information for each type heater tube skin thermocouples covered in
the bid.
1.2.3 All items, as offered, shall be field proven and should have completed trouble free
satisfactory operation for a period of minimum 6 months on the bid due date in the similar
application with the process conditions similar to those as specified in the purchaser's data
sheets. Items with prototype design or items not meeting proven-ness criteria specified above
shall not be offered.
1.2.4 All documentation submitted by the vendor including their quotation, catalogues, drawings,
installation manual, operation and maintenance manuals etc., shall be in English language
only.
1.2.5 Vendor shall also quote for the following:
a) Two years operational spares for each type of skin thermocouples and its
accessories offered in the bid, which shall include spare element, terminal blocks,
gaskets etc., as a minimum.
b) Welding rods of suitable material required for the welding of skin thermocouple
assembly to the heater tube.
c) Any special tool and tackles needed for maintenance work. In case no special tools
are necessary for the offered heater tube skin temperature monitoring, vendor must
certify the same in their offer.
1.3 Drawings and Data
1.3.1 Detailed drawings, data, catalogues and manuals required from the vendor as indicated by the
purchaser in vendor data requirement sheets shall be submitted by the vendor.
1.3.2 Final documentation consisting of design data, installation manual, operation and
maintenance manual submitted by the vendor after placement of purchase order as per vendor
data requirement, shall include the following as a minimum:
a) Certified drawing sheet for each heater tube skin thermocouple and its accessories,
which shall provide the following details, as a minimum;
i) Dimensional details, internal constructional details, end connection details
and material of construction.
ii) Installation details, showing location of holding clips, expansion loop
orientation etc.
b) Copy of type test certificates.
c) Copy of the test certificates for all the tests indicated in clause 4.0 of this
specification.
d) Installation and welding procedure for each heater tube skin thermocouple and its
accessories, which shall also include ASME or AWS specification for the welding

rod required for welding for offered skin thermocouple sheath to the heater tube as
per the material specification given in the data sheets.
e) Calibration and maintenance procedures including replacement of its internal parts
wherever applicable.
2.0 DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
2.1 The type of heater tube skin thermocouple assembly shall be either welded type or extraction
type. The type of assembly shall be offered as specified in job specifications.
2.2 Each heater tube skin thermocouple shall be supplied as a complete assembly consisting of:
a) Magnesium oxide insulated sheathed thermocouple element with stainless steel
compression fitting and terminal head. The total length of the thermocouple shall
be determined by the vendor based on data sheets and drawings enclosed with the
job specifications.
b) Retaining clips required for each assembly as per the quantity indicated in the
purchaser's datasheets or as recommended in installation drawings.
c) Welding rods of suitable material required for welding of offered skin
thermocouple sheath to the heater tube.
d) Any other item, not specifically indicated, but required to make installation of
heater tube skin thermocouples complete.

23 Element
2.3.1 Unless specified otherwise, the thermocouple element shall meet the following requirements:
a) The thermocouple element shall be type 'I(' as per IS-7358 or IEC 60584. The
thermocouple properties and limits of error shall be as per IEC 60584-1.

b) Thermocouple element shall be duplex type and element wire diameter shall
correspond to 16 AWG for duplex.
2.4 Sheath
2.4.1 Unless specified otherwise, the thermocouple sheath shall meet the following requirements;
a) The sheath material shall be AISI type 446 Stainless Steel.
b) The outside diameter of the sheath shall be minimum 9.5 mm and the sheath wall
thickness shall be minimum 2.2 mm for pad type Duplex thermocouples. The
outside diameter of the sheath shall be 12.7 mm and the sheath wall thickness shall
be minimum 3.18 mm for knife edge type.
2.5 Sensing Section
2.5.1 The sensing section shall be either pad type or knife-edge type. Vendor shall supply the type
of element as specified in the purchaser's data sheet.
2.5.2 The extreme end of the sheath (in the direction opposite to the terminal head) shall be formed
to achieve a 'Wedge' shape/pad shape in the lower half section. This formed section shall
extend to a length of 50 mm.
2.5.3 The thermocouple junction shall be grounded and shall be in the middle of this formed
section. The junction shall be located at the tip of the wedge/pad.
2.5.4 The formed section shall be straight or curved to suit the heater tube outer diameter as per the
data sheets.
2.5.5 The formed section shall be welded to the heater tube on the circumferential periphery for
obtaining the skin temperature of the tube, as per manufacturer's recommendation.
2.5.6 Protection shield shall be provided to cover the thermocouple at heater tube side.
2.5.7 When specified design requires extraction of temperature element, it shall meet the following

a) The sensing element is designed to fit into a pad, which is welded to the heater tube.
b) The element, if required, can be pulled out of welded pad and can be reinserted.
c) The protection shield shall be welded from three sides.
2.6 Retaining Clips
2.6.1 Unless otherwise specified, retaining clips shall meet the following requirements:
a) Retaining clips shall be 63 mm long, 12 mm wide and 3 mm thick. These shall be
used for holding thermocouple sheath to the heater tube.
b) The material of retaining clips shall be AISI type 446 Stainless Steel.
2.7 Terminal Head
2.7.1 The terminal head shall consist of a cast aluminium case, screwed on cover and terminal
block. The terminals shall be clearly identified for their polarity.
2.7.2 The terminal block shall be clearly marked with the IS/IEC calibration letters to designate the
type of thermocouple. An extra terminal shall be provided and connected to the head for
grounding the shield. Separate screw shall be provided on the terminal blocks for terminating
incoming cables.
2.7.3 The thermocouple sheath shall be fixed to the terminal head by a stainless steel compression
fitting. The cover shall be fastened to the case by a stainless steel chain with a swivel. It
shall be provided with a screwdriver slot. A heat resistant and moisture proof gasket shall be
placed between the case and the cover.
2.7.4 Unless otherwise specified, the assembly shall confirm to the following standards:
a) The heads shall be weatherproof to IP 65 as per IS/IEC 60529.
b) In case of flameproof construction, heads shall be flameproof to the specified area
classification as per IS/IEC 60079 and weatherproof to IP 65 as per IS/IEC 60529.
2.7.5 Nickel plated brass plugs shall be provided for spare entries.
2.8 Performance Requirements
The vendors' thermocouple design together with the welding procedure shall produce
measurement accuracy within plus minus 8°C of actual surface temperature of the tube.
3.0 NAME PLATE
Each thermocouple assembly and its accessories shall have a stainless steel nameplate
attached firmly to it at visible place, furnishing the following information:
a) Tag number as per purchasers' data sheets.
b) Thermocouple type as per IEC/IS.
c) Type of Protection for thermocouple head.
d) Manufacturer's name/trade mark.
e) Manufacturer's serial number or model number.
4.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING
Purchaser reserves the right to inspect and witness testing at vendor's works as per Inspection
Test Plan. All these tests shall be completed by the vendor and test reports shall be submitted
to Purchaser for scrutiny.
5.0 SHIPPING
5.1 Proper care shall be taken in shipping the skin thermocouples. All items shall be adequately
packed to withstand shipping conditions, without damage.
5.2 All threaded entries shall be suitably protected to prevent entry of foreign material.
