REMOTELY CONTROLLED COMPREHENSIVE
LOCK FOR DOORS AND GATES OF AN
APARTMENT

ABSTRACT

Today, safety and security is just a click of the appropriate technology

away, and with such advancements happening, the security of ones home and
multistorey building must not be left behind. While considering the security system,
the first objective is to protect all doors and gates. This project aims to accomplish
the above goal in designing a remote controller with a display, which will control
multi doors thereby providing highly safe security systems for homes, bungalows
and multistorey Apartments. The function of a remote control system is to check
the locking condition of door, to lock the door remotely, responding to the request
and producing an alarm in case of any emergencies. The hardware design of this
device consists of sensors, RF module, PIC micro controller, buzzer and
rechargeable battery.

1. INTRODUCTION

Overview

“Security” is the prime word in any business and since that being so
important is a very helpful and good topic for the benefit of mankind to develop a
secure system. Though securities are assigned for apartments, the number of thefts
and robbery was not reduced. So it is necessary to provide a safe and secure system
for homes, bungalows and multistory apartments. At present there are many
security systems available in market for door and gate automation, but if the
consumer needs one system or device which controls all doors of an entire house
or multi doors of an apartment then there is a problem as there is no such system
available in the market yet. This is relatively a new concept, but once it does then it
will definitely help the securities also reduce occurrence of theft and robbery.
Scope

This project is to design a controller, which controls multi doors and

gates of an apartment by displaying a message by just one click, to ensure that all
these are safe and secure and also produce an alarm during any hazardous.

Working Principle of the System

Figure 1: Function of Remote Controller

It is assumed that initially the door is closed. The door can be unlocked
and opened only manually. The remote is used to periodically check the status of
door locking position and giving a display whether the door is locked or unlocked.
In case of any emergencies the alarm sound is produced to alert the security
people.

Components of the Prototype

 Lock- magnetic lock

 Locking system- optical locking system (concept of card reader)
 Sensor- magnetic/ IR sensor, vibration sensor
 Wireless communication-RF transmitter and receiver

Benefits of Remote Control

Wireless technologies represent a rapidly emerging area of growth and

importance for providing ubiquitous access to the network.

Easy to access - It can be operated within or out of the house or a building.

Time consuming - Instead of going to each door and locking, can be operated
from one place.
Highly safe and secure -Alarm signal is produced during any break-ins of the
door.
Flexibility- Due to wireless control it is highly adaptable
Disadvantages

1. Periodic replacements of batteries results in high expenditure.

2. Limits the distance between sensors, cameras and the controller.

2. DESIGN APPROACH

The first step taken in designing the system is to figure out what equipments
need to be secure. This is the initial stage wherein the devices that need to be
connected for security and then they put in the network and corresponding work is
done. Then draw the block diagram showing all devices, sensors, inputs and
outputs.

General Schematics of Remote Control

This is a general-purpose remote control using programmable PIC micro

controllers. Remote controls usually consist of encoder/decoder parts connected to
a transmitter/receiver module, which takes care of the transmission of digital
signals, by radio or infra waves the transmitter has a varying number of buttons
and sends the states of these inputs to the receiver. The receiver device decodes the
message and sets the outputs accordingly.

The signal on the attached sensors are captured and given to the micro
controller. It will transmit or receive the signal according to the required action.
Magnetic sensor is always low when it sets high a corresponding signal is
transferred to indicate the door is opened. A smoke detector is present to detect the
smoke.

Figure4: Block Diagram of System with RF Transmitter and Receiver

There is a constant source of electricity of +5v to the sensor and

devices. If there is any smoke the controller detects high on the sensor and send the
signal to produce an alarm. If there is any voltage change in vibration sensor then
an alarm is produced. This is due to detect any break ins of doors. The remote
comprises of led, micro controller, switches, RF transmitter and receiver module
and rechargeable battery. According to the signal received it displays message on
the LED and also it transmits the signal to control the door automation.

The sensor outputs are given to a controller. There are two controller
must be used for transmitting and receiving signals between remote and door.
When a switch is pressed from the remote, the coded signal will pass from
controller1 through RF transmitter1. This coded signal will be received by RF
receiver1 and given to controller2. This will check the condition and transmit the
signal as per required via RF transmitter2. This signal is received by RF receiver 2
and given to the controller1 for displaying a required message. There are separate
switches for different controls in a remote.

Manual Operation

The building’s standard card key mechanism is used as the manual

approach. In this system when card is inserted it reads the code and the lock is
released. Using this concept, door is opened manually by optical locking system.
The components used where opto isolator, relays, micro controller and magnetic
lock. An initially continuous current flow as long as the light falls from Led to the
photo detector and hence door is locked. When a light is interrupted the lock is
demagnetized and the door is unlocked

The Opto isolator is connected to the relay contacts such that a continuous
flow of current present in the magnetic lock. By inserting the card in between Led
and photo detector light gets interrupted, and the contact from the relay moves to
open contact or closed contact there by cutting the current flow and demagnetizes
the lock to release from armature

Once the card has removed, after some delay it will automatically locks the
door. Delay is provided for the persons to enter through door. The PIC micro
controller is programmed to give small delay and to control the relay contacts.

CONCLUSION

Safety and security is the topmost priority in the multistorey building. So

this project helps in providing a safety and security to the apartments by designing
a remotely controlled lock for doors and gates. The main objective of this project
in protecting all doors and gates of an apartment by checking its status periodically
and producing an alarm during hazardous has been achieved. In future this remote
controller will surely help the security people to prevent theft and robbery in
homes, bungalows and in apartments.
