CA1 Learning Online (Part 1)

For each CA activity, there are non-assessed activities to do before and after the assessed task,
called pre- and post-tasks. Pre-task activities will help prepare you for the assessed task so you
are strongly advised to do them. In CAs with group work, these pre-tasks are vital for organising
the work. Post-task activities have been designed to help you get the most out of the assessed
tasks. They will help you maximise your engagement and learning potential during the course.

CA1 Feedback & Assessment

CA1 is worth 10% of your Final CA mark. You’ll receive individual feedback for TASK 1. See
Appendix 1 for the Assessment Criteria for CA1.

In order to pass Continuous Assessment, you must participate in the tasks in all six CAs.

Important: All work you submit for this course must be original. Do not copy-paste from the
web or other sources. Any material taken from another source must be credited. For more
information, see: http://cv.uoc.edu/adf/~s_eao_0005_u01/plagiarism_IM.htm

 Pre-task 1

1. Learning Online Part 1 self-correcting exercises

Start CA1 with the exercises in Learning Online Part 1 in Materials in the classroom. They’ll
help you widen your vocabulary, revise grammar areas and you’ll read and listen to ideas about
the topic in the assessed task.

I’ve learnt something today!

Throughout the course, we encourage you to share your experiences with
English, both inside and outside the classroom in the folder I've learnt
something today in the Forum. You can talk about new words you learn,
grammar areas you work on, etc. Reflecting on what you learn is an excellent
way to go over new language areas or consolidate old ones!

2. Speaking naturally

During the course, you’ll do different activities to work on your natural spoken English. To help
you practise, make an audio recording of yourself talking in English about something (e.g. a
hobby) for about 1 minute. Use any recorder for this (e.g. mobile phone, computer). Before you
start, make a few notes (see Appendix 2) to help you remember what you want to say and also
to help structure what you say, but don’t prepare a written text. Don’t send this recording to
the classroom; just listen to the recording and think about how natural you sound.

Now go to Langblog in the classroom and record a short video telling
us about your experience and/or sharing any ideas and advice for
speaking English naturally. You can record directly in Langblog or
record your video offline and then upload it to Langblog in Activities
> Speaking naturally.

Check the quality of your video is good enough for your teacher and classmates to hear. Make a
new video if not.

 TASK 1 Videos wanted!

You see this announcement on a language learning blog:

Videos wanted!

We’re building a video library with our readers’ opinions and recommendations for the best
online applications and resources for learning languages today. We need your videos and
your comments!

1. Send us your video (1 minute approximately) answering the following questions about one
of your favourite online resources (apps, websites, etc.) for learning languages online:

● What’s the resource like?

● How can you get it?
● What can you do with it?
● Who would you recommend this resource to?
2. Watch as many others as you can. Try some of the resources mentioned yourself and post
a video reply. In your reply, say if:

● you think these resources are useful and give them a mark out of ten.
● there was anything you didn't like about them.
● you’ve used any of the resources before.
● you think you might use any of them in the future. Why / why not?

Record your videos in Langblog > Activities > CA1 Videos wanted!
CA1 Learning Online (Part 1)

Task tips!

● Remember to speak naturally (i.e. don’t read from a written text).

● Use notes to remind you of the main points and help structure what you want to say.
Develop the main points as you speak.

● Practise a few times before you record your video. The more you get involved in
Langblog activities, the more you can practise speaking English naturally and the
more your speaking will improve!

● Check the quality of the recording and repeat the activity if necessary.

● See the Assessment criteria in Appendix 1 to understand how your teacher will assess
you.

 Post-task 1

Watch and listen critically to your videos in TASK 1 Videos Wanted! and read the Assessment
criteria CA1 below. Think about the following questions:

● Did you speak for about a minute in your main contribution?

● Did you comment on a selection of your classmates’ videos?
● Do you think you sound clear and natural?
● Was your grammar accurate?
● Did you use vocabulary and expressions from the unit?
● What do you think you need to do to improve your individual speaking?
Post a message to the I’ve learnt something today folder in the Forum with your ideas and
thoughts.

 Appendix 1 Assessment criteria CA1

100% of the mark for CA1 will be based on your contributions to TASK 1 in Langblog using

● Completion of TASK 1 (Have you answered the questions, talked for a minute and
commented on a selection of your classmates’ videos?)
● Effectiveness of the communication (Is your message clear?)
● Natural intonation
● Use of grammar, vocabulary and expressions from the unit
