Operating principle
Having defined the lighting and choice of optical equipment, the vision system is
based on the concept: acquisition, digitalisation, then analysis of an image.

b Lighting and choice of optical equipment

The lighting is a deciding factor regarding the success of a vision system application.
The lighting system and optical equipment must be set-up according to the results
required.

b Acquisition of the image

The capturing of the view is performed by a camera with an analogue video type
output signal.

b Digitalisation of the image

The acquired image is digitalised. It is broken down into 256 shades of grey with a
resolution higher than 250,000 pixels (512 x 480).

b Analysis of the image

The image is analysed according to the monitoring parameters (checkers): line,
binary window, grey-scale window, binary edge, grey-scale edge, feature extraction,
matching and character recognition.
These monitoring parameters are associated with position, rotation and exposure
adjustment functions.
Analysis of the image enables verification of:
- dimension,
- position,
- presence/absence,
- imprint, etc.
The analysis results are output (display, logic outputs, etc.).

Communication with PLCs

The vision controllers incorporate:
- 2 serial ports for communication with a PLC and/or a PC,
- 25 inputs/outputs (comprising 11 inputs and 14 outputs).

The vision controllers are compatible with PLCs. They communicate using Modbus
point to point protocol, third party protocols or in ASCII mode with RS232C link.
They integrate in Telemecanique brand automation system configurations.

Lighting systems

Lighting is an essential part of the vision system.

It is defined according to the environment, space, type of application, type of
monitoring to be performed and speed of the object to be detected.
The lighting system must be selected in order to obtain the best enhancement of the
object that the user wishes to monitor in the application.
Examples of lighting systems:

b Shower system

The shower system comprises a series of radially mounted LEDs. It is a very

powerful lighting system which enables illumination of the object along its axis, from
above.
The shower system is recommended for monitoring precision, markings, etc.

b Back light system

The lighting is placed behind the object and facing the camera. The diffused lighting
provides a clear silhouette of the object (shadow puppet).
The back light system is recommended for measuring the sides of an object or
analysing opaque elements encapsulated in glass.

b Bar system

The bar system is used for highlighting a small surface area of the object to be
detected and casting a shadow.
The bar system is recommended for location of specific flaws, monitoring of screw
threads, etc.
Each object must be strictly positioned in the same manner.

b Low angle system (oblique)

The low angle system enables edge detection, monitoring a marking and detecting
flaws on glass or metal surfaces.
The low angle system is recommended for monitoring printed characters, surface
condition, detecting grooves, scratches, etc.

b Coaxial system

By directing the light towards a semi-reflective mirror, the coaxial system enables
highlighting of smooth surfaces perpendicular to the optical axis.
The coaxial system is recommended for monitoring, analysing and measuring flat
metal and other reflective surfaces.

Vision controller XUV M110 has a position adjustment function, vision controller XUV
M210 has a position and rotation adjustment function.

Search zone for position and b Saving of data and parameters

rotation adjustment Data and parameters can be saved in the vision controller. Any parameter not saved
is erased when the vision controller is switched off.
DF531027

Data saving can also be initiated via the serial interface from a PC or PLC.

The function enables the storage of rejected images and identification of the failed
monitoring parameter.

b Setting-up help
It is important to carry out the camera and lighting settings before any inspection.
The help parameters simplify the setting-up of the vision controller by setting the light
Detection zone with rotation
corrected
and level of binarisation.

Display and output of inspection results

The inspection results can be displayed on the screen and/or sent to a PLC, PC or
parallel output.
b Display
The positive or negative result is displayed in the monitoring parameter screen.

b Conversion
The conversion function is used for substituting the number of pixels counted by the
actual dimensions of the object. Conversion is performed with the aid of the edge
detection function which enables calculation of the number of pixels between the
graduations.
Various data can be defined for the vertical and horizontal directions.

b Judgement output
Judgement results provided by the monitoring parameters and numerical calculation
programmes, can be transferred to other peripherals (PC, PLC, etc.).

b Spreadsheets
During the course of image processing, the total number of inspections, errors and
judgements are saved and displayed.

b Monitoring data
The “monitoring data” function displays a list of the numerical calculation results and
judgement outputs. 20 items (2 pages with 10 items on each) can be saved.

b List of monitoring parameters (checkers):

This function displays a list of the monitoring parameters status. It enables overall
viewing of the monitoring performed with their number and result.
