Cause and Prerequisites

You are considering a database change and/or operating system change.

Solution
The procedure that we recommend to change the database system or the
operating system is described in the migration guide. The migration guide
is available on SAP Service Marketplace. You can access the migrations
guides at http://service.sap.com/instguides under the relevant product in
the "Installation" section. The names of the guides vary depending on the
SAP product and version. The common keyword is "System Copy".

To support operating system or database migrations, SAP offers the remote

service "SAP OS/DB Migration Check". The elements of services, tools and
documentation form the basis for successfully executing the migration. The
tools support the R3load procedure.

This R3load procedure is generally the procedure we recommend. For some

database systems, SAP also uses database-specific procedures. These are
described in the relevant migration guide. Different procedures are also
possible but they are not supported by SAP. As a result, the executing
consultant is entirely responsible for these procedures and SAP cannot
provide support for these procedures.

The services include guidance during migration planning, hotline support

for the SAP tools, and an SAP operating system or database migration check.

Therefore, we offer services that support you in all phases of the

migration project. The project plan check ensures that the time frame for
the project is appropriate. SAP tools enable you to check that it the data
transfer was complete and consistent. The SAP migration check for the
operating system or the database checks the operating system parameters and
the database parameters and prevents possible performance bottlenecks.

To execute an OS/DB migration, the following are required:

1. A technical consultant, specially certified for OS/DB migrations,

executes the migration locally, irrespective of whether you are
migrating a development system, a test system or a productive system.
This ensures that the required "know-how" is available to deal with
the complexity of the situation.

2. You use the migration check for the operating system or the database
to migrate production systems.

SAP can provide hotline support for the migration only if both of these

prerequisites are met, you use a copying technique that is supported by

SAP, and you use the correct migration tools. In general, the tools that
are provided in the installation kit up to Basis Release 4.6D are not
released for an operating system or database migration (at least not for
data export). As of Basis release 6.x, the installation kits contain all of
the required tools.

If the prerequisites are not met, we must inform you that SAP cannot
provide any SAP Support Line support for your migration. All support during
the migration, when solving inconsistencies and performance problems, and
if data loss occurs, can be provided by SAP only as a consulting service
that is subject to charge.

Also note that the client transport tool does not support copying complete
systems or transporting production clients. Therefore you cannot use this
tool to make a system copy.
