Observation #4 – Social Studies Lesson (3/13/20)

Class: 4/5 Combo (5th Grade Standards)

Subject: Important Women in History

Teacher: Theresa Weaver

Objective: (What students will know and be able to do as a result of this lesson?)
 SWBAT draw on information from multiple print or digital sources.
 SWBAT read and comprehend history/social studies informational texts.
 SWBAT engage in whole class and partner discussions on grade 5 topics.
 SWBAT collaborate with peers and create an informational poster.

Standards:
 RI.5.7 Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the
ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.
 RI.5.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including
history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 4-5 text
complexity band independently and proficiently.
 SL.5.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups,
and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others’
ideas and expressing their own clearly.
 SL.5.4 Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and
using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or
themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.

Duration: 1 Hour and 20 Minutes

Materials and Resources Needed:


 24” x 32” Poster Paper
 Chromebooks
 Writing Materials (Pencils, Colored Pencils, and/or Markers)
 Equity Sticks
 Tape
 Document Camera

Assessment:
- Teacher will ask students thought-provoking questions before, during, and after the
article.
- Presentation Notes will be used as individual formal assessments of what students have
learned from lesson.
Instructional/Teaching Sequence (Include time allotted for each):

Introduction (5 min.)
1. Teacher will begin lesson by activating student prior knowledge with a question.
a. Who do we celebrate in the month of March?
2. Teacher will direct students to turn-and-talk with their partners to discuss the question.
3. Equity sticks will be used to choose students to share answers with the class.
4. Teacher will state that March is Women’s History Month and ask students to share
several prominent Female figures.
5. Teacher will tell students that they'll research about different prominent figures who
are significant in the Women’s History.
Small Group Task (40 min.)
1. Teacher will review the instructions of the group task.
a. Students will create a poster about a figure in Women’s History.
b. The poster must include:
i. Person’s Name
ii. Job / Career
iii. Why are they important?
iv. Two Interesting Facts
v. One Quote
2. Teacher will answer student questions before moving to the next step.
3. Following questions, Teacher will create groups of four students (8 groups total).
4. Teacher will distribute poster paper and photos of the Important Figures.
a. Ruby Bridges, Sacagawea, Malala Yousafzai, Mother Teresa, Amelia Earhart,
Marie Curie, Helen Keller, Sally Ride
5. Teacher will state that an e-mail was sent to students containing the biography links to
each figure. In addition, students may use other reputable online sources to gather
information.
6. Each group has a different important figure as their focal point.
7. Student will have 35 minutes to complete the group task.
8. Teacher will be circulating classroom and monitoring the progress of the students as
they complete the task.
9. Teacher will also be available to answer student questions and clarify any confusion
regarding task.

Jigsaw Presentations (25 min.)


1. Students in each group will be assigned a number from 1 to 4.
2. Students who received 1 as their number will gather in teacher designated corner of the
classroom.
3. This dividing strategy will be repeated with numbers 2, 3, and 4.
4. After dividing, there will be 4 groups that have 8 students in each.
5. Each group member will be the “Biography Expert” of the poster they helped create.
6. Teacher will place each group at a specific poster.
7. Students will have 3 minutes present and answer questions about each prominent
Female figure.
8. Each student will also have to take notes on three Important Women during the
presentations.
9. Teacher will signal the rotation every 3 minutes until all the posters have been covered.
10. As the students are presenting, the teacher will be circulating the classroom and asking
questions regarding the biography’s main idea and supporting details.

Closure (10 min.)


1. Students will return to their seats.
2. Equity sticks will be used to pick several students to share what they have learned with
the class.
3. Students will be asked to turn in their papers.

Differentiation/Accommodations:
 Pictures of Historical Figures (Visual)
 Group Task
 Partner share before whole class discussion
 Provide extra time as needed
 Teacher is available to be used as scaffold during learning tasks
