Granny Five-peaks

or

Granny Pentagon

By Teresa Alvarez (June 2011)

About copyright: You are free to do everything you like with the
crocheted/knitted item, but please reference where you found the pattern!
This is the next step to a granny square. It is very simple, but I like to have the
pattern written down. I hope this is useful for you!

I had the idea after visiting the granny triangle by Alice Best:
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/granny-triangle-2

ABOUT YARN:
Whichever you like!

ABOUT GAUGE:
It is not important, as far as you are consistent with your tension.

ABOUT HOOK:
It depends on the yarn.

ABOUT CROCHET TERMS:

I’ve followed the US terminology.
Stitch: st
Chain: ch
Slip stitch: sl st
Single crochet: sc
Half double crochet: hdc
Double crochet: dc
Treble crochet: tr
Double treble crochet: dtr

ABOUT THE PATTERN:

Round 1: magic ring, 3 ch (it counts as the first dc here and at the beginning of
every round), 2 dc, [3 ch, 3 dc] repeat 4 times, join with dc on top of 3rd of
3ch (this trick will create the same space than 3 ch, but we will have all
the space available for the beginning of next round without the need of
turning the granny or introducing sl st). If you want to change colors,
remember that is a good idea to use the final loop of the round to do it.
Alternatively, you can fasten off and begin with the new color. 

Round 2: [3 ch, 2dc, 3ch, 3dc] into the space created with the dc of previous
round (this is the first peak, now we prepare the granny for the non-
corner repetitions), [1ch, (3dc, 3ch, 3dc) into next 3ch space of previous
round] repeat 4 times, join with sc on top of 3rd of 3ch (of the beginning
of this round).
Round 3: [3ch, 2dc, 1ch] into the space created with the sc of previous round,
[(3dc, 3ch, 3dc) into next 3ch space, 1ch, (3dc, 1ch) into next 1ch space]
repeat 4 times, (last corner) (3dc, 3ch, 3dc) into next 3ch space, join with
sc on top of 3rd of 3ch (of the beginning of this round).
Round 4 and onwards:
 Work [3ch, 2dc, 1ch] into the space created with the sc of
previous round.
 Work [3dc, 3ch, 3dc, 1ch] into every 3ch space (of previous
round). This will create the corners. Replace the 1ch for a sc when
crocheting the last corner of the round.
 3dc, 1ch into every 1ch space

if you are changing colors, the final dc in the first round and the final sc in all the
other rounds can be substitute by a ch and sl st onto top of 3rd of 3ch of the
beginning of the round.
