l righ
about crocheting a fingernail-sized bunny? It’ll live in the smallest
of lpockets,
A or make a nice friend for the doll.
When using the materials listed (one strand of embroidery floss and a 0.5 mm
crochet hook [US Steel Crochet Hook Size 18]), the resulting bunny will be 2 cm
[0.8 in] tall, ears not counted.

Materials and tools.

 Embroidery floss in Main Color, skein separated (stripped) into individual

strands. (I use Gamma or DMC brand cotton embroidery floss). May be
substituted with thin sewing thread. The thinner the thread, the smaller the
bunny will turn out.
 Embroidery floss or sewing thread in color White for the muzzle and paws.
 A length of black sewing thread for the eyelids and stripes on the muzzle.
 Embroidery floss in any color for embroidering the nose.
 Rip-resistant thread for cinching. (I used sturdy sewing thread held double.)
 Crochet hook 0.5 mm [US Steel Crochet Hook Size 18].
 Glass toy eyes diameter 1 mm. (What to do if eyes in this size are not
available? You can make your own from polymer clay and cover them with a
glossy enamel finish, or use seed beads.)
 Glue gel, “Moment” brand super glue.
 Thin beading needle, diameter 0.45 mm [0.02 in].
 Sharp nail scissors.
 Stuffing (polyester fiberfil).
 A toothpick or broken felting needle – used to
insert stuffing.
 For blushing – oil pastel and toothpick.

Break the working yarn, leaving an end of about 20 cm [8 in] for seaming and
embroidering the eyelids.
Sew the remaining opening closed.

Legs, make 2:

an inc, then work 1 sc, into the next ch, work 3 sc, and
1 sc ea in the remaining 2 sts, which yielded 8 sc (8) (to

Break the working yarn, leaving an end for

seaming. Sew the remaining opening closed, and
exit the tail at the inside of the thigh, two rows
below. This point will be our entry point. This
means that when you’ll sew the legs to the body,
you’ll have to insert the needle into this very
spot when going through the leg the leg, and
then exit in the opposite direction.
This will be explained later in more detail,
including a video link.

Muzzle, in color White:

1. ch4, beginning into the 2nd ch from the hook, work

an inc, then work 1 sc, into the next ch,
work 3 sc, and 1 sc ea in the remaining 2 sts, which
yielded 8 sc (8)
2. Work an incomplete round: inc, 3 sc, inc and sl-st.
To embroider the nose, make 2 horizontal stitches with
contrasting color embroidery floss, then wind the floss
several times around these initial stitches, to add volume.
Insert the needle under the stitches and pull at the thread – repeat 4–5 times.

For ease of work, hide the tails on the inside of the head.
Pin the muzzle to the head between Rounds 8 and 12, check
for symmetry, exit all no longer needed tails in the back of the
neck.
Using white thread, accurately sew around the muzzle, when
just a few stitches remain, stuff with fiberfil, then sew on the
remainder.

Now, cinch for shaping. The photo on the following page shows the cinching
points. Attach new thread at the base of the head (shown with arrows) and exit
the needle at Point 1, then insert the needle into Point 2, and exit at the base of
the head. Cinch to shape, pulling with medium strength. Repeat the steps for
the other eye socket. Exit the needle in Point 3 and insert into Point 4. Exit the
needle at the neck, cinch.

To secure the tail, sew through the head a few times in different spots. I don’t
make any knots at all, everything holds in place even without them.

10

Sew the eyes into the recessed

sockets resulting from cinching.
Additionally securing them with
super glue is mandatory! Add a drop
of super glue to the tip of a needle,
then insert the needle under the eye
and press firmly.
Since I used eyes with shanks, this
was very easy.

The eyes are located between Rounds 8 and 9, almost at the edge of the muzzle,
spaced at a distance of 5 sc from each other.
Make sure to check for symmetry, this can be done by
holding the bunny in front of a mirror. If there are any

flaws, they will be noticeable this way. The more

symmetrical the muzzle, the prettier it will look!

tiny creature. For ease of work, you can just place a
single stitch, put glue underneath it and press it on. I,

however, have embarked on making real eyelids as for
my larger toys:

For the eyelids, first make one long diagonal

stitch (you can stop here if you want, even at
this point, it will already look nice), fastening
it securely by sewing it onto the head with a
few small stitches.

11

Fill in volume for the eyelids by winding the yarn around the initial stitch. Work
the second eyelid the same way.

Embroider two dome-shaped eyebrows, hide the

tail of the eyebrows on the inside of the head, by
sewing through a few times, no knots!

Paint the ears with a toothpick and oil pastels.

On the body, the needle needs to be inserted between Rounds 4 and 5 for the
legs, and between Rounds 9 and 10 for the arms. Count rounds from the bottom
(from the end) of the crocheted piece.
This video shows the method of making thread joints.
