THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
INTRODUCTION
The ministry of the Holy Spirit is the most amazing ministry that
is available to all believers in Jesus Christ according to the
scriptures. This is a ministry that is not just reserved for those
involved in full-time gospel ministry work but every Christian
can and does have access to the ministry of the Holy Spirit
operating within them.

God the Father's ministry is primarily a ministry of Love towards

the Believers. Jesus the son of God's ministry is primarily and
ministry of Grace towards the Believers. The ministry of the
Holy Spirit is a ministry of fellowship with the Believers.

2 Corinthians 13:13
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the
fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

In this teaching of the ministry of the Holy Spirit we shall look at

the foundational principles of fellowshipping with the Holy Spirit
and being able to hear him.

The wisdom, the power, the love and the advice available to us
through the working of the Holy Spirit is immeasurable. The
Gospel of Jesus Christ makes available to us the Holy Spirit so
that we may be able to fellowship with Him and receive this
powerful life changing ministry.

What makes the Christian believer a child of God is the Holy

Spirit who lives within the Christian.

1 Corinthians 6:19
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy
Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not
your own?

It is because the Holy Spirit lives within all Christians by the

power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that everyone has the
potential to be led into their respective destinies by the Holy
Spirit.

Romans 8:14-16 (NET)

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.

15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to
fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry,
“Abba, Father.”
16 The Spirit himself bears witness to our spirit that we are
God’s children.

If you believe in Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and saviour

and the holy spirit is already at work within you:

Matthew 16:15-17 (NET)

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the
living God.”

17 And Jesus answered him, “You are blessed, Simon son of

Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but
my Father in heaven!

The revelation of Jesus as the Son of God and the saviour of

our souls is one which is given to us by God the Father through
the working of his Holy Spirit in us. Everyone who has believed
the gospel has already been touched by the Holy Spirit and He
is already living inside them. This teaching does not seek to
introduce a new spirit that is separate from the Gospel of Jesus
Christ but to explain rather the working Holy Spirit that you
have already received by believing the gospel.
When you understand the principles of how the Holy Spirit
works within you, you will be able to fellowship more deeply
and more meaningfully with Him. May God give us more grace
in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
THE PURPOSE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

One of the unique ministries of Jesus Christ is to Baptize Believers in the

Holy Spirit. We preach, teach and encourage Baptism in the Holy Spirit
so that the Believer can easily be led by the Holy Spirit.
There is a lot of direct reference to the work of the Holy Spirit in leading
every Believer not just those called to ministry work. In fact, the work of
the ministry is to bring all Believers to maturity of faith and knowledge of
Christ.

Believers are not meant to be utterly dependent on a fivefold minister,

even after 50 years of deep fellowship with Christ:

Ephesians 4:11-15 (NHEB)

11 He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers;

12 for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the

building up of the body of Christ;

13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the
Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the
fullness of Christ;

14 that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and

carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in
craftiness, after the wiles of error;
15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who
is the head, Christ;

As a church if we fail to build in each individual Believer, a deep sense of

personal individual connection with God the Father and the Son through
the Holy Spirit, we have deprived the child of God of one of the core
purposes of the calling in Christ.

The Holy Spirit is not just a force that brings wonderful sensations and
tongues (though we welcome all these with great joy), He is a
manifestation of God that has a distinct personality, and when we
receive Him, we potentially can hear Him and follow the leading of the
Holy Spirit. After all:

Romans 8:14 (NHEB) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God,
these are children of God.

To be a child of God, by definition we must all learn to be led by the Holy

Spirit. This is a lifelong process and there will always be people called in
the work of teaching Believers in this area for sure, but, a lack of any
discernible growth in our ability to be led by the Holy Spirit after a
decade of being Christian should be a serious cause of concern for both
the Believer and the minister.

In this teaching we are going to look at what this ministry involves in a

synopsis, in so doing we can identify more easily when this ministry is
being undermined in our lives.
THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Jesus today is alive and actively involved in the ministry of Baptizing

Believers in the Holy Spirit:

Luke 3:16 (NHEB) John answered them all, "I indeed baptize you with
water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I
am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and
with fire,

Acts 1:5, 8 (NHEB)

ou will be baptized in the
5 For John indeed baptized in water, but y
Holy Spirit not many days from now."

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon
you. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the uttermost parts of the earth."

To be Baptized in the Holy Spirit is to be immersed in the Holy Spirit.

The Believer should be taught to expect this Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
People will experience this Baptism differently and we will cover that at
another time.

There is an awareness of the Holy Spirit living inside the Believer that
should be expected after the Baptism. In the case of the Apostles, they
were taught to expect power to accompany this Baptism, specifically the
power to be witnesses for the living Christ.

We see the Apostles performing signs and wonders and moving in the
grace of God, after receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Please note that our Baptism in the Holy Spirit is based on faith in Jesus
Christ and His finished works alone. While human ministers may be
used in this process, the message is about Jesus Christ and His
finished works, it is not about the ministers own power or Holiness.
Baptism in the Holy Spirit is possible in an environment where Jesus is
glorified as supreme. We must teach and preach expecting Jesus to be
actively involved in this work.

Sometimes, God will allow us to have Holy Spirit sessions that do not
dwell a lot of Christ and His finished works in the beginning of our work.
Yet, to sustain a meaningful movement of the Holy Spirit, Jesus must
always be glorified and preached as being alive and active and amongst
us. A failure to move in this truth will see a gradual diminishing of the
manifestation of God's power in our meetings, until they become
painfully dry.

If we return to giving Jesus all the glory, and worshipping Him, the Holy
Spirit becomes very happy to work in such an environment:
John 16:14-15 (NHEB)
14 He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it
to you.

15 All things whatever the Father has are mine; therefore I said that he
takes of mine, and will declare it to you.

We should be vigilant and suspicious of an environment that does not

glorify Jesus, but nevertheless continues to exhibit great feats of
supernatural spiritual power. This is not how the Holy Spirit works, this is
another spirit. The Holy Spirit is uncomfortable in an environment where
man is being excessively glorified and Jesus is mentioned only in
passing.

THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1 Corinthians 12:4, 7-13 (NHEB)

4 Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.

7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit
of all.

8 For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to
another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;

9 to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by

the one Spirit;
10 and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to
another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and
to another the interpretation of languages.

11 But the one and the same Spirit works all of these, distributing to
each one separately as he desires.

 nd all the

members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

or in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether

13 F
Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink of one
Spirit.

1. The Holy Spirit gives various spiritual gifts to all Believers. There are 9
gifts of the Spirit listed.

2. While there are many gifts of the Spirit, there is only one Holy Spirit.
There is only one Holy Spirit, and He works with us ministers and never
for us. Let us treat Him reverence and all due respect.

All Believers who are Baptised in the Holy Spirit, have access to the gifts
of the Holy Spirit through faith and their relationship with God and
according to the will of God.
I believe in impartation and I also am used in this area, but the
suggestion that impartation is the only way to receive gifts of the Spirit is
wrong.

This suggestion will come in the form of excessive teachings on authority

and submission. Many benefits will be given for submission, including
but not limited to receiving gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The way this message is packaged and presented means you must give
inordinate reverence, praise and constant words of affirmation to the
minister in order to get your gift and impartation. Such words or
affirmation and praise should rather be going to Jesus Christ and God
the Father who is the true and only Father of spirits:

Hebrews 12:9
Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid
them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the
Father of spirits, and live?

THE VOICE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Finally let us note that the Holy Spirit speaks. The purpose for all
believers receiving the Holy Spirit is so they can begin to hear the voice
of the Holy Spirit.

All mature Believers have the capacity to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit
speaking directly to them:
John 10:16
I have other sheep, which are not of this fold. I must bring them also,
and they will hear my voice. They will become one flock with one
shepherd.

John 10:27
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
Very simply if you are a sheep of Jesus, you will hear His voice. Jesus in
the book of John divides his followers into two categories: sheep and
lambs.

John 21:15-16 (NHEB)

15 So when they had eaten their breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?"He said to him,
"Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you."He said to him, "Feed
my lambs."

16 He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love
me?"He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for
 end my sheep."
you."He said to him, "T

Lambs are believers that are not yet mature. At this stage the Believer
cannot hear Jesus for themselves and they need more guidance and
support.
A mature Believer should be able to hear Jesus speak to them clearly.
I'm not speaking about an audible voice but Jesus speaking to the heart
and spirit of the Believer.

Everyone should expect that and be taught to expect that. We do not

receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit to just speak in tongues and it
ends there. We need to grow to sheep that hear the voice of Jesus and
personally follow Him.

The fivefold ministries are not meant to replace this expectation (to hear
the voice of Jesus) in believers. Our purpose is to build in believers a
holy expectation and awareness of the fact that the Holy Spirit they have
received can and does indeed speak to them.

Acts 13:2
As they served the Lord and fasted, t he Holy Spirit said, "Separate
Barnabas and Saul for me, for the work to which I have called them."

Acts 20:23
except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that bonds and
afflictions wait for me.

Acts 20:28
Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which t he
Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God
which he purchased with his own blood.
Acts 21:11
Coming to us, and taking Paul's belt, he bound his own feet and hands,
and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit: 'So will the Judeans at Jerusalem
bind the man who owns this belt, and will deliver him into the hands of
the Gentiles.'"

The Holy Spirit can lead all mature Believers and in our Christian walk it
is healthy to expect and pray towards that state where we are confident
that Jesus God speaks for us all. That's maturity as a Christian.

The church should not be made to feel as if the way they hear the Holy
Spirit is somehow inferior. The goal is for all believers to grow to be able
to hear God for themselves and have a measure of confidence in that
hearing.

Over time the believer should graduate from being a blind follower of
ministers to having a good solid relationship with the Holy Spirit where
they can be told things clearly and have confidence in what they hear.
This produces a strong church. Ministers should not fear this.

A church of people that hear the Holy Spirit does not need to do much
fundraising for example, mature Believers will be prompted by the Holy
Spirit.

Be suspicious of a church or ministry that discourages you from hearing

God for yourself over time. With maturity this ability to hear God the Holy
Spirit in ourselves should grow in all believers not just those called to
ministry. If you are teaching or being taught that you can only hear God
clearly through a certain person, you are in danger of receiving another
spirit.

We embrace the ministry of the fivefold and as long as Jesus tarries this
ministry will continue to grow in grace and anointing, the growth of the
fivefold is linked to the growth of the congregation. Ministers should not
feel threatened or be dismissive of congregants that hear God, this is a
sign that you are doing a good job if there are such people in your
church. May God give us more grace. Amen.
HOW TO HEAR THE HOLY SPIRIT

We looked at how the Sheep of Jesus hear His voice:

John 10:27
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

We also learnt that Jesus, in the gospel according to John, separated

His followers into sheep and lambs. Sheep being more mature followers
and lambs being less mature followers.

Based on this we realise that according to the word every mature

Believer has the capacity to hear Jesus speaking because of the Holy
Spirit indwelling in them.

If you have received Jesus and the Holy Spirit as a Believer you have
the capability to hear the voice of God. All mature Christians have the
capacity to hear God. We are going to practically look at how this works,
what it involves and how we can flow in this ability. May God give us
more grace, amen.
THE WORD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

The difference between a mature Believer and one who is not is their
grasp on what the scriptures call, "the word of Righteousness".

Basically, a Believer that has a strong conviction of their righteousness

in Christ, has a much easier time hearing God. You cannot hear God if
you have a lingering sense of unrighteousness, condemnation,
unworthiness or spiritual inferiority before God.

To be strong in the word of Righteousness is to have a strong

understanding and conviction that you are justified by faith in Christ. In
other words, your belief in Jesus is your own righteousness and
therefore boldness and confidence before God. If you feel like your sins
are too great for the blood of Jesus to cleanse or that you are too
insignificant for God to love and talk to, you are wrong and you need to
grow in the word of Righteousness:

Hebrews 5:13-14 (NHEB)

13 For everyone who lives on milk is not experienced in t he word of
righteousness, for he is a baby.

14 But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use
have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.
WHAT IS JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH?

A mature Believer understands as their foundation that they are justified

by faith in Jesus alone and this is sufficient to give them good access to
a healthy relationship with God.

Abraham had faith in God's word, and that faith was considered by God
to be righteousness.

Romans 4:3-8 (BBE)

3 But what does it say in the holy Writings? And *Abraham had faith in
God, and it was put to his account as righteousness.

4 Now, the reward is credited to him who does works, not as of grace but
as a debt.

ut to him who without working has faith in him who gives

5B
righteousness to the evil-doer, his faith is put to his account as
righteousness.

6 As David says that there is a blessing on the man to whose account

God puts righteousness without works, saying,

appy are those who have forgiveness for their wrongdoing, and
7H
whose sins are covered.
appy is the man against whom no sin is recorded by the Lord.
8H

Faith clears your account in Heaven so there are no sins recorded over
your life. I see this a lot in visions. When I pray for forgiveness of sins
over my own life or the life of anyone, I see myself in Heaven before a
book of records. Each person has a book that records their deeds both
good and bad and these deeds are recorded by the Holy Spirit.

When the faith in the blood of Jesus is applied all the bad deeds are
removed as if they were never written at all and the good deeds remain!
This is a picture of justification by faith and how it works in the life of a
believer. The stronger this sense gets in a believer the more mature they
are and the greater their capacity to hear God. You have this boldness
and sense of entitlement that comes with righteousness and that allows
you to pray and expect an answer from God. Justification by faith is the
word of Righteousness:

Galatians 3:5-6, 11, 13, 25-29 (BBE)

5 He who gives you the Spirit, and does works of power among you, is it
by the works of law, or by the hearing of faith?

6 Even as Abraham had faith in God, and it was put to his account as
righteousness.

11 Now that no man gets righteousness by the law in the eyes of God, is
clear; because, The upright will be living by faith.
13 Christ has made us free from the curse of the law, having become a
curse for us: because it is said in the Writings, A curse on everyone who
is put to death by hanging on a tree:

25 But now that faith is come, we are no longer under a servant.

26 Because you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

27 For all those of you who were given baptism into Christ did put on
Christ.

28 There is no Jew or Greek, servant or free, male or female: because

you are all one in Jesus Christ.

29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and yours is
the heritage by the right of God's undertaking given to Abraham.

PRAY EXPECTING AN ANSWER - THE ART OF LISTENING

When praying there are two things involved, speaking to God and
listening to God for an answer.

There are prayer styles and methods that feel powerful but do not allow
one to listen. Those who are very seasoned in hearing God can pray
aggressively and still listen but as a start quiet your soul before the Lord
and listen.
Psalms 131:2
See, I have made my soul calm and quiet, like a child on its mother's
breast; my soul is like a child on its mother's breast.

To hear God, you must learn to make your soul quiet. Some effort is
required for this at first. If you sit down and concentrate on silencing your
thoughts before the Lord and focusing only on a few simple words of
prayer. Jesus used this very technique here:

Matthew 26:39, 42 (BBE)

39 And he went forward a little, and falling down on his face in prayer, he
said, O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup go from me; but let not my
pleasure, but yours be done.

42 Again, a second time he went away, and said in prayer, O my Father,

if this may not go from me without my taking it, let your pleasure be
done.

Jesus repeated one prayer point with breaks in between for listening.
This style of prayer is what I call the "art of listening".

If you are very talkative in your normal prayer style this will feel foreign
and strange. You can still have prayers like that but for hearing God you
must slow it down and zero in on one point at a time. Let's learn from
Jesus a few points here:
1. Jesus expected an answer from God, we should also expect an
answer. This will structure our wording. If your prayer is full of either
complaints or is not focused enough on getting a response no response
will come. The power of your prayer is your faith, faith that God will
answer you.

2. Take breaks to listen, do not fall into vain repetitions.

Matthew 6:7
But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they
think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Vain repetitions are when you get into a mode where you keep repeating
a prayer point or declaration over and over without concentrating or
expecting God to really respond. You in essence have faith that if you
repeat yourself enough God will act based on that sheer volume of your
words. This is not effective. What is effective are words spoken in faith.
Few words in faith are worth infinitely more than many words without
faith.

Pray, then take time to listen. Expect God to respond. Believe that
because you are righteous in Christ, He hears your prayers. If you
believe God is Almighty, He can certainly hear even your thoughts. God
hears your prayers. Believe that. If God hears your prayer Believe He
will answer.
3. If you don't get a response after waiting a while, repeat the prayer in
faith. Jesus repeated His prayer because He expected an answer. This
is not a "vain repetition", but a calm deliberate request with faith in God.
It takes focus, concentration and faith.

If we perfect this style of prayer we will begin to see results in the form of
definite answers.

HOW GOD SPEAKS

For some, God has been speaking already but they have failed to
recognize His voice. He speaks in a variety of ways indeed. We want to
cover the most universal way in which God speaks, this is called the
"still small voice"

1 Kings 19:11-13 (NHEB)

11 He said, "Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord."Behold,
the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and
broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the
wind. After the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the
earthquake.

12 After the earthquake a fire passed; but the Lord was not in the fire:
 till small voice.
and after the fire a s
13 It was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle,
and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice
came to him, and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

The presence of the Lord was in the still small voice.

There are a variety of ways in which the Lord can speak to each
believer. God can speak with an audible voice in dreams and visions and
in various supernatural encounters. We want to put all that aside for now
and say emphatically, do not focus on and expect that as a standard.
Many times, if you are to hear God in this way it will just happen without
much effort.

Every Believer can hear the still small voice, but not everyone
recognizes that it's God.

This voice is so small and gentle it's like our own thoughts but somehow
you can tell it's not you. That's why you hear many Believers say,
"something told me..", that something which you can distinguish as not
being you but a voice that spoke to you is the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit in particular is incredibly gentle and sensitive. To hear

Him well your soul must be in a gentle place. Anger will not serve you
well here. Be gentle and He will seem to speak to you more easily. He is
infinitely powerful but He is also very sensitive and gentle. His voice is so
gentle that most have dismissed it as something.
If the Holy Spirit is working well in your life you may not notice many of
the times He speaks to you, you will just think you had a sudden good
idea, or a sense of conviction that you must do something. He does not
necessarily announce Himself and say with a loud boisterous thundering
voice, "hello I am the Holy Spirit, this is my advice!"

He will speak to you when you are calm sometimes as you are drinking a
cup of tea or listening to some worship music, He will just say a phrase
or two. Most people don't notice this and if you don't notice Him, He
won't say more. If you ignore Him, He will stop speaking. If you
acknowledge Him and recognize Him and thank Him, He will speak more
and more. If you follow His leading, He will speak more.

All mature Believers know His voice. The scriptures say "my sheep hear
my voice". You do know His voice somewhere inside you, you just need
to focus on it.

When I had my first out of body experience to Heaven, it was an

incredible experience. I got to experience what it will be like in the
afterlife to some extent. While walking in Heaven the Holy Spirit spoke to
me, but His voice seemed audible. The remarkable thing was it sounded
the same as the small still voice only this time it was audible. He spoke
in the same way He would speak while I was in the body. It was not like
meeting Someone new. The same way He spoke with the small still
voice is exactly how He sounded here. This gave me so much
confidence in the small still voice.
By God's grace I do see and hear God in remarkable ways but of all the
ways I tell you nothing is more remarkable or superior to the small still
voice. The audible voice and visions have a limited scope; they don't
happen all the time but the small still voice can speak about all things all
the time.

Most Believers tend to listen with their physical ears for God to speak.
This is a mistake, listen with your heart instead that's where God lives
inside you. Do not listen with the ears of the flesh, listen with the inner
ears that's where the small still voice is found.

John 16:7, 13-15 (NHEB)

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away,
for if I do not go away, the Counselor won't come to you. But if I go, I will
send him to you.

13 However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into
all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will
speak. He will declare to you things that are coming.

14 He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it
to you.

15 All things whatever the Father has are mine; therefore I said that he
takes of mine, and will declare it to you.
A PRAYER TO HEAR THE HOLY SPIRIT

As I finished this booklet the Holy Spirit gave me a prayer for those that
wish to hear Him speak to them here and now. Find a place to sit down
comfortably and pray this prayer,

“Heavenly Father, I thank you today that you so loved me that you sent
your Son Jesus to live and die for my sins, and by your Holy Spirit He is
risen again for my justification. I come to you my Father with faith,
boldness and conviction that because of the finished works of Christ you
hear my prayers and that you answer me now. Speak to my heart by
your Holy Spirit. Your word says that I hear your voice because I am
your sheep. I believe your word and I am expecting you to answer me
now in love. I believe in you; I trust in you and I am thankful for you Holy
Spirit. Amen.”

After you pray this prayer just sit and wait for 5 minutes with your eyes
closed. He will speak to you now and you will hear Him in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
