Orientation Events:
Orientation is designed to familiarize you with Concord University and student life. As such, it is
important that you attend all scheduled events of Orientation week, including the opening
Saturday session, information programs—Shot of Reality, PlayFair, Organization Fair, Sex
Signals, Student Employment Sessions, etc. Make certain that your attendance is recorded by
signing a Sign-In Sheet at each event. If you have failed to make it to one or more events, please
let me know ASAP. We can make arrangements for you to discuss the relevant topics with a
representative from the Academic Success Center to receive credit.

Attendance, Events & In Class Work:

I will be taking attendance every week and am obligated to record attendance in Blackboard, and
individuals in the Academic Success Center regularly monitor it. Please make every effort to come
to class. If you are not going to be able to attend, please notify me in advance.

In addition to attendance in class, you are expected to attend three types of campus events:
 Academic Event: this is usually a guest speaker event, but may be something else. If you
are unsure come ask me whether the event meets the requirement
 Athletic Event: this can be any sporting event. Many students choose to attend a football
game, but we do have a number of other athletic teams competing on campus regularly.
Feel free to explore those other sporting events.
 Cultural Events: We do have a number of cultural events on campus throughout the
semester. You should be able to look on the Concord website for upcoming events
 Clubs: I believe that participation in one or more clubs on campus is a great way to find
people with common interests who are looking for new people to join in and share. I am
willing to allow participation in a club event to substitute for one of the other three events.

My intent is to use class time to answer questions, discuss topics that are of interest to you and
provide suggestions for how you might make the most out of your time at concord. This is an
unstructured back-and-forth between all of us, including myself. In general there are no
assignments to be completed in class. However you should come prepared for class with questions
or topics you want to discuss.

Blackboard Modules:

Concord utilizes Blackboard as an instructional tool in many courses. Therefore it is important for
you to be comfortable logging on to and using Blackboard.

You log in to Blackboard (Bb) using your Concord MyCU username. Your 774# is your initial
password. You can change your password once you successfully log on to Bb.

Begin with My Announcements on Bb—be certain to check Announcements daily. This

is where you will receive important course information, such as updates, schedule changes,
extra credit opportunities, and more.

4
Read the information in My Course Information on Bb—this section provides
important information about Course Navigation (also under My Technology); your
Syllabus; CU and course policies; how to obtain help with the UNIV 100 course; and the
CU Honor Code, which you should memorize.

Look at the different topics covered under Student Tools & instructor Tools:
I will let you know what of this information I expect you to review and have discussions
on as the course progresses. For now, just make sure you see it and can get to it.
I will post more information to Blackboard as the semester progresses regarding specific Modules
or Units in blackboard that I would like you to complete in advance of a given date. I will send an
e-mail to your ICU account and add an announcement to blackboard to let you know when I have
assigned something.
I rely on you as adults to complete the modules and units as requested and to come to class
prepared to discuss topics from the modules. I will not re-read the information or lecture on it in
class. We will only discuss it. Thus, your preparation is essential to having a successful class.
Further, you ability to contribute to discussions will directly impact the participation component of
your grade.

Mandatory Workshops:
Students must attend all three workshops (choose either day for each). If you are unable to attend,
please let your instructor know as soon as possible.

the reading you will need to complete for any assignment.
Service Activity:
Students are required to participate in at least one service activity during the semester. You may
suggest an activity or I can find one for you. We will discuss this in more detail in class during
the semester.

Students are required to prepare a Poster Presentation near the end if the semester. You are to
present/share/expand upon an aspect of what you learned in UNIV 100 with fellow UNIV 100
students and CU administrators, faculty, and staff. This year's theme is TECHNOLOGY, so be
creative! We will discuss this more in class.

Course Policies: Course policies are described in Bb under My Course Information. Students
in UNIV 100 should be familiar with applicable university policies and those specific to UNIV
100.

Accommodations: Please see the instructor if you have a disability and are requesting
accommodations. The University and instructor will work with you to provide a reasonable
accommodation. Concord University’s Disabilities Services Office is in the Student Center,

Class Absences or Cancellations: You are expected to attend Orientation, each class
session, the Service Project, and the UNIV 100 Wrap-Up Event. If you cannot attend a session
because of illness or emergency, you should notify your instructor, preferably in advance, via
Email or using whatever means your instructor specifies. If your instructor must cancel class
because of illness or emergency, he/she will notify you in advance through your campus Email
and/or Bb Announcements. Concord University closings and delays are announced through the
Emergency Alert System and via local media. To enroll in the CU alert system, visit
