Aim of the unit
The Overall aim of this unit is to enable the student to display knowledge on how clinical
diagnosis of common conditions can be made utilizing her previous courses knowledge.
Specific objective
By the end of this unit the student will be able to:
Review history taking. And clinical manifestation of disease.
Do physical examinations head to toe including chest and heart auscultation.
Do palpation of abdominal organs and be able to recognize the significance of the
findings.
Read laboratory test and apply the finding to the clinical examination.
Special test and their meaning.
Use of sneller chart, otoscope and stethoscope to make diagnosis.
Contents:
Review of history taking, taking vital signs, and observation, palpation and auscultation.
Physical examination from head to toe and its significance.
Palpation of the various organs of the body and significance of the finding.
Auscultation of heart and lungs and significance of the finding.
ENT examination and significance of the findings.
Eye examination and significance of the findings.
Gynaecological examination and its significance.
Breast examination.
Using the diagnostic flow chart to make a clinical diagnosis.
Unit Objectives
By the end of this unit the student will be able to::
Describe in details the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular vascular system and
respiratory system
Describe and be able to recognize the clinical manifestations of the patient suffering from
cardiovascular vascular diseases.
Describe the planning and giving of effective care and rehabilitation to patient suffering
from cardiovascular diseases.

Review of anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular-vascular system
Review of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.
Review of the physiology of pulse and blood pressure.
Significance of some symptoms and sign’s:
o Irregular heart beat.
o Dyspnoea.
o Angina pectoris
Special investigations to facilitate the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.
Arrhythmia’s:
o Synous arrhythmia.
o Extra systole.
o Athrial fibrillation.
o Heart block.
o Paroxysmal tachycardia.
o ventricular fibrillation.
Hypertention: types, predisposing factors, pathology, manifestation, manage and
prevention
Coronary artery disease, their manifestations, management as well as rehabilitation and
prevention.
o Coronary thrombosis.
o Myocardial infarction
o Rheumatic heart disease.
o Sub acute bacterial endocarditis.
o Syphilitic heart disease.
o Throtoxic heart disease.
Congenital heart disease:
o Patent ductusarteriosus.
