"If children feel safe, they can take risks, ask questions, make mistakes, learn to trust,

share their feelings, and grow." ~ Alfie Kohn. Children are most successful when they are

engaged in a classroom that promotes a sense of belonging and safety. The first school

experience is challenging for both parent and child. It is vital that both parent and child feel

secure and supported. It is important that I gain an understanding of my students' interests,

strengths, and struggles so I can ensure each feels welcome and eager to learn. In my classroom,

I welcome every family and encourage parents to participate.

Play is essential for the development of the whole child. Play allows for social

interactions, communication, and physical development. A hands-on curriculum supports all

aspects of play. Children are active learners, and engagement in learning centers allows children

to learn through manipulation and experiences. These hands-on activities scaffold learning as

children can relate such experiences to their lives outside of the classroom.

Before a child can successfully learn, they must be happy and healthy. As a teacher, it is

my responsibility to ensure children's needs are met. In my classroom, I promote cleanliness and

proper nutrition by encouraging proper hand-washing, providing healthy snacks, and teaching

proper hygiene.

The role of a teacher is far from easy, but it is incredibly rewarding. My goal at the

beginning of each school day is to ensure my children are ready to learn, are happy, and feel

supported. The most rewarding element of teaching is the ability to witness a child's growth, and

experience the special bond between teacher and student.
