FAA to TCCA Pilot License Conversion AC No.

401-001 As of 03-10-2015

Under the Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA), to facilitate acceptance of various aspects of each
other’s aviation safety oversight systems for the benefit of the users of those systems.

AC-61-135A is the TCCA to FAA conversion document for reference. Slightly different requirements but
mostly the same.

• I can convert my FAA certificate to a TCCA without surrendering my FAA airmen certificate
• CARs Part IV outlines the equivalent information that 14CFR Part 61 explains for pilot licensing
• Applicant (me) is responsible for completing the forms, reviewing pre-requisites and conditions
of conversions in the AC and the associated licensing fees with this application.
• Must have met recency requirements prior to exercising privileges under TCCA pilot license.
• Sport pilot certificate not included.
• FAA airman certificated issued under foreign pilot license conversion is not applicable for this
TCCA conversion procedure
• Step 1: Get TCCA medical certificate updated.
• Step 2: Ensure English Language Proficiency Level 4 or higher still valid.
• Airmen certificate is accepted identity (Canadian license booklet)
• Private, Commercial, Airline Transport are covered
• Instrument Rating, aircraft class or type rating (i.e. seaplane)
• Step 4: [Section 6.2 in the AC] Conversion Commercial Pilot License- Aeroplane (FAACA) written
exam. This exam covers air law and communication differences between the countries).
• Minimum 200hrs of pilot flight time. Must show
• No practical test required!
• Step 5: [Section 6.4 in the AC] Must pass written exam Instrument Rating Aeroplane (FAAIA)
written on air law and communication. No additional experience or practical test required! …. IF
I have passed an FAA IPC with accordance to 14CFR Part 61.67(d)(1) and (2) in airplane or FSTD
in the past 24 months prior to application. – Good until May 25, 2019.
• Step 6: Other Ratings, Seaplane (ASES or AMEL) no practical test required, no written exam, just
show medical. Finish Multi engine rating as well before applying for license conversion
• Step 7: Go to TCCA Regional Office, submit first form: application for verification and conversion
of FAA pilot certificate form and applicable fee.
• Submit second form: Application for an Aviation Document Booklet
• Step 8: Says to now write the written exams which is step 4 and 5. Ask if you can write them
before process.
• Documents to show:
o Applicable FAA airmen certificate
o Proof of citizenship- Canada Passport/ birth certificate
o TCCA medical
o Proof of hours (log book)
o Written exam scores
o Instrument rating (FAA IPC … which is the check ride date)
