Essential Question:   How is invasive seaweed harmful to Hawaii’s aquatic environment?

Three Points to Prove: #1: Communities can combat the problem
#2: Invasive algae can be repurposed
#3: The removal of the invasive algae helps the environment

Point that this Source Proves:   # 1

Excerpts (These should provide insight into the Point to Prove):

NOAA provided $3.4 million in Recovery Act funding to The Nature Conservancy to remove invasive
algae from coral reef in Hawaii’s Maunalua Bay.

This problem also gives employment to people to help the issue.

The community working together already removed 200 tons of algae.

Analysis (How does this source support the Point to Prove?):

According to the video, NOAA provided $3.4 million in Recovery Act funding to The Nature
Conservancy to remove invasive algae from coral reef in Hawaii’s Maunalua Bay. Which means that
the cause is big enough to get the governments attention. Which is going to worth organizations that
will put the money to use. The organization that received the money is Malama Maunlua. They host
community service opportunities to help remove invasive seaweed. The community can come
together for a good cause. Which is to bring the aquatic environment of Hawaii back to the way it
should be. Which is for native species to thrive.
Even though that this problem is bad for the environment. It is good for the community. It
brings people from all over together to achieve a common goal which is to remove invasive algae
from the water of Oahu. The problem cannot be solved without the help of the community because
there is so much invasive seaweed. What is also good is that it gives jobs to people. The problem
gives jobs to people who are willing to help the cause.
According to NOAA, the community have removed over 200 tons of invasive algae which is
very good. I don’t believe that the community could have accomplished those numbers without the
help of volunteers. Scientists can only do so much in terms of removals. But it is the community’s job
to up keep the environment. The beach belongs to everyone and the only way to keep it looking
great is to come together to help the cause.

This is a reputable and  reliable  article because it is a documentary by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration regarding the issue of invasive seaweed in Hawaii.

Research Journal
During this week, My partner Andrew Onato and I have made very good progress in our

project. We have a good idea of who we want to interview. The made a few calls already and

sent some emails to some organizations and we are just waiting for a response. I really hope that

we get a response soon or else we are going to have to either follow up with the people or find

someone else to interview.

We also have been looking in community service opportunities. We want to do a invasive

seaweed removal with a real organization. So we can be more educated about the problem as

well as be taught by people who know what they are doing. After we go to a few of the

organized invasive seaweed removals events. Then we might feel comfortable to go out on our

own to further cleanse the beaches of invasive seaweed. Or we might just only attend organized

invasive seaweed removals events if we don’t feel comfortable going by ourselves. Because we

don’t know if we need any certification or pass to remove invasive algae from the ocean. I don’t

want to attempt to go on our own until we know for sure what we are doing is legal. We also

need to research we is the best place to remove invasive seaweed from. We want to find an area

that is very abundant with invasive seaweed so that we don’t really have to search for the

invasive seaweed.
