What is the Design Process?

I. Read the following text and label the paragraphs according to their meaning

a) Documentation of ideas
b) Production
c) Define the problem
d) Finding solutions and ideas
e) Testing and refining

The design process is five steps through which scientific principles are applied for the solution of
everyday problems. These steps are:

Define the problem

1. ________________________________________________________________________
The design process is undertaken after a specific problem or need has been identified. The
identification of the problems occur in the research and development (R&D) stage of
manufacturing. Once scientists and engineers working in R&D have identified the need of a
product or discovered a problem, the design process is used to make the new product or solve
the problem.

Finding solutions and ideas

2. ________________________________________________________________________
In this phase, ideas are examined and a concept of the overall design is developed. Preliminary
sketches are used to document the design, so that problem can be “designed out” easier.

Documentation of ideas
3. ________________________________________________________________________
In this phase, all preliminary drawings or sketches from the previous phase are transmitted into
a finished package. In the past, designs were documented on drafting tables using rulers,
compasses, pencils and pens. Today, this is accomplished using Computer Aided Drafting and
Design (CADD) systems.

Testing and refining

4. ________________________________________________________________________
In this phase, the design must be tested in more realistic modes. This might involve the building
and testing of prototypes, live-scale models, or using computer visualization. Examples of
computer visualization are computer animation and virtual reality.

Production
5. _______________________________________________________________________
In this production phase, the design is sent off to be produced with the use of a CADD system,
the data from the design is translated into a format that a Computer Aided Manufacturing
(CAM) system can understand. The CAM software can write a program for a computer
controlled machine to produce the parts.
