1.

What is the most serious impact of invasive species to the Hawaii Ecosystem

It Depends on people. For some people, its lifestyle and culture. Like little fire ants in home. For

others, it would be damage to native forest.

2.Do you think invasive species is as detrimental to economic as any other natural disaster? Why

or why not?Yes. It is definitely detrimental to economy and we actually have great data on that.

The fire ants are actually causing 200 million dollar damage on big island. They also exist in

other islands. Another example of invasive species like Onita caused 700 thousands dollar a year.

3.In Hawaii, do you think it is particular important to control invasive species compare to other

state? Why or why not?Yes, definitely. Because we have high proportions of invasive species in

Hawaii and we have lots of threatened native species. So we have lots to loss by have invasive

species here.

4.What are some ways that general people like us can help protect native species? Report

invasive species sight to government, using phone number, website, or email. Make sure not

transporting invasive species, clear gear when traveling from island to island or hiking.

5.What are some invasive plants or animals that you think need special focus and public

awareness? Little Fire Ants is really terrifying and easy to move, so we need to be aware of that.

We can test our yards and we have testing kit for free and people can get to test their ants. Onita

and Coconut Rhinoceron Beetle.

6. Could invasive species also hurt human health? In what form?

Absolutely. The primary concern of human health right now is mosquito. We have no mosquito

but they are introduced in accidents. They cause disease such as yellow fever.
7.How can invasive species affect the ecosystem besides choking out the living space of native

species? They damage ecosystem by outcompeting with native species, change the soil to a place

where no native species grown.

8. Other ways that invasive species alter the environments?

Erosion, invasive species increase the likelihood for erosion. They can also cause damage to

infrastructure

9. Do invasive plants cause more harm or invasive animal cause more harm to the ecosystem.

It is hard to tell. I would say animal because they are mobile. They can have their impacts in

much more area.

10. Is there any invasive species extinct in Hawaii because of invasive species?

Yep. We have several native forests disappeared. I can’t recall on top of my head.

Research Log #7
For this spring break week, I haven’t start doing any research work. I scheduled the

interview with Nate Dube of the Honolulu Invasive Species Committee and decides to conduct

the interview during the spring break. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, we switched

the in-person meeting to on-phone meeting and finished my second interview.

I received lots of important information and data from the two interviews such as the

amount of economy damage caused in Hawaii, reasons for why invasive species are particularly

important to Hawaii and other valuable information that I can use in my research paper. They are
all professional people who are working on in the invasive species control committee directly in

Hawaii.

Now, my may focus is the research paper. I have finished the outline of the paper on the

essential question of the impact of invasive species to Hawaii islands are ready to fill my

research logs and interview logs into the research paper.
