Diagnostic:

State and causes of Drug abuse in Tanzania

Drug abuse continues to be rife because progress in spreading Tanzania’s
economic and social benefits has been uneven and many of the marginalized
citizens have seen little or no improvement in their life.

The number of people in Tanzania who have to survive on $1.10 a day or

less has risen by one million to 12.7 million in the last six years while
traditional social values remain dormant. Researchers have attributed this
mainly to an annual population growth of 2.6 percent.

Tanzania is one of Africa’s biggest recipients of development aid with almost

40 percent of the current 2008/09 budget funded by outside donors. Foreign
aid agencies are willing to invest into the country because of its political
stability, attempts to crack down on corruption and sound fiscal reforms but
efforts to revive traditional social values still ignored.

There are several reasons that explain why Tanzania remains poor and drug
abuse hit despite a number of efforts made since her independence in 1961.
The first major reason for Tanzania being poor is the lack of efficient
government regulation. Without a solid framework for legal and social
infrastructures, it is not realistic for the government to be able to execute its
policies effectively. Moreover, systems of accountability are relatively weak

in Tanzania. This is partly due to the lack of records and infrastructures for
permanent residential addresses. Accountability contributes to the
motivation of the government to perform well and lack of such can
undermine their efforts to create conditions suitable for poverty eradication
and sustainable development. The reason here is failure to match economy
growth and social values strengthening strategies.
