The Power of Home Cooking

“No one is born as a great cook, one becomes great by learning”, Home Cooking is among one of the
most intimidating yet easy things to do in life. Remembering back to when I was a child I always did
think I had a thing for food. “Looks at slide 2”. I can confidently say food is one of those things that
affects a person Physically, Mentally and Spiritually. People always think that they don’t have time for
cooking food at home because it’s a hassle or time consuming, but yet again, shut down your phones
check your fridge, suddenly you have all the time in the world. Today, I’m going to tell why Cooking at
home provides a healthier diet, proves as an important life skill and brings us more joy. These are the 3
things why you should start to cook at home.

Healthy Diet, according to Egan, J, Home cooking doesn’t only serve to satisfy your hunger, it is actually
healthier compared to dinning out or getting food delivered. It is due to the fact that if you cook your
own meals, you get to control which goes in what you cook and besides that, you get to see how your
meal is prepared. Let me ask you guys who has a goal to get thinner or more fit? according to a study by
Richard Fogos, what you eat has a bigger impact compared to the exercise you do. In the study it says,
the exercise is only a small part because you need the right amount of energy to finish the right amount
of exercise and that energy comes from what you eat. If you continue to eat junk food you will continue
to lack energy to exercise.

Life skills, who wants to eat instant noodles and canned foods for the rest of their life? “Looks at slide 8”.
Well, cooking is just like driving or biking, once you get the hang of it, it gets easier. Cooking has been a
stable life skill the dawn of time, our ancestors have been cooking their food and based from from
culinary cues institute of America, cooking is the most important life skill due to the fact we need to eat
to stay alive. Now talking about staying alive, cooking at home does not only help you stay alive
physically, it also helps you stay alive financially. Did you know that a home cooked meal is twice as
cheaper than dinning out or getting food delivered.

Lastly, old people were asked, what is the secret to a long life, they answered, “Always be happy”.
Cooking at home brings us more joy, the most important thing on my list would be “family time”. We as
college students go to class Monday to Saturday, having 5 hours of class each day, your parents go to
work and your siblings, do whatever they are doing, either they are younger or older. Life is short, time
will not stop ticking for you or for me, we should enjoy every second with our family, cooking at home
with or for your family is one of the best ways to spend time with them and according to a study
“Cooking with a partner, a friend or family members “is a great way to relieve stress, try something new,
create conversation, laugh and make fun memories” (Egan, 2017)

Once again, let me summarize by saying, Cooking at home provides a healthier diet because if you cook
your own meals, you get to control which goes in what you cook, besides that, you are sure what goes in
your food compared to going to dine out somewhere. Proves as an important life skill because ever
since the start of time, humans have been cooking their food, it is not only a life skill, it is a survival skill
and Brings us more joy because “Cooking with a partner, a friend or family members “is a great way to
relieve stress, try something new, create conversation, laugh and make fun memories” (Egan, 2017).
Home Cooking may look basic but in the long run, this skill will give you so much more. Thank you for
