Deruny are classic Ukrainian potato pancakes made with finely[faɪn.

li] grated
potatoes, onions, eggs, flour[flaʊər].
It is believed that deruny came to Ukrainian cuisine from Belarus cuisine , where this
dish came from German cuisine at the end of the 19th century. According to another
version, the distribution[dɪs.trɪˈbjuː.ʃən] of potato pancakes and other potato dishes in
the territory of Ukraine, mostly in Polesia , started even earlier - in the second half of
the eighteenth century. First written recipe for potato pancakes served in a cookery
book of John Shyttlera in 1830. During the Holodomor of 1932-33, the pancakes
were made of dried and ground leaves of linden, hazel[heɪ.zəl] , dock[dok] , chaff[tʃɑːf]
and press cake .

Deruny are traditionally served hot, paired with a dollop[dɒl.əp] of sour cream. There
are many versions of these pancakes, with added ingredients such as ground meat,
mushrooms, or cabbage.
This dish is made of potato, onion, eggs and tastes really unique. Peel potatoes and
onion and grate them. Beat up an egg and combine it with potato. Add salt, flour and
mix everything properly. Heat oil in the pan and pour the potato mixture in the form
of the round pancakes. Fry until one side of the pancake gets a golden color and then
turn over.
