My Nursing Philosophy

During my time at the University of Arizona College of Nursing I have been guided by amazing

faculty and staff members that have showed me the art of nursing. Now that I am graduating

with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, I am expected to create my own nursing philosophy.

My nursing philosophy will describe how I intend to practice nursing and how patients and their

family should be treated while under my care. My nursing philosophy includes treating others

how I want to be treated, provide patient-centered care, and health promotion and disease

prevention.

While providing care to patients in the hospital is important to keep in mind that these people are

experiencing some of their most vulnerable times. They are stuck in a hospital bed and depend

on other people to do the things they need. During this time, they may also be very frightened.

That is why it is important to treat others the way you would want to be treated if it was you in

the bed. Show them love and compassion during this scary time.

Always provide patient-centered care. It is important to understand that everyone patient in the

hospital is a person, and every person has their own thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. Providing

patient-centered care will allow for a deeper connection with the patient and promote a more

trusting relationship. Taking time out of the day to have one-on-one time with each patient is

important so that no pertinent information is missed.

Lastly, promoting health and preventing disease is why I became interested in the profession in

the first place. I have an opportunity to make an impact on someone’s life every single day, so by

educating them on health promotion and disease prevention they are more likely to live a happier

life.
