Phenomenology

In my opinion, phenomenological study describes the meaning for several individuals of their
lived experiences of a concept or a phenomenon. The experience can be insomnia, being left out,
anger, grief, or depression. There are two types of phenomenology; hermeneutic and
transcendental. Hermeneutic focused on lived experience and interpreting the value of life. It is
not only a description, but also an interpretive process where the researcher makes an
interpretation of the meaning of the lived experiences. On the other hand, transcendental, focused
on a description of the experiences of participants. In this case, the participant tells the
experience from a fresh perspective as if for the first time. There are many difficulties of this
study. First, it requires basic understanding of philosophical terms. Second, the participants must
be chosen carefully so that they belong to the same bracket of lived-experience. Third, the
researcher can be confused to put different experiences to the right brackets.

Case Study

Based on what I’ve read so far, case study research involves the study of an issue explored
through one or more cases within a bounded system. There are three types of case study
research; single instrumental, collective or multiple, and intrinsic. In a single instrumental case
study, the researcher focuses on an issue or concern, and then selects one bounded case to
illustrate this issue. In a collective case study, the one issue or concern is again selected, but the
inquirer selects multiple case studies to illustrate the issue. The intrinsic case study focused on
the case itself because the case presents an unusual or unique situation. The difficulty in case
study research is that the researcher must identify his or her case. The researcher must decide
which bounded system to study, recognizing that several might be possible candidates for this
selection and realizing that either the case itself or an issue, which a case or cases are selected to
illustrate, is worthy of study.
