Alternatively referred to as GWAM, which is short for gross words per minute, and is similar to WPM
except it does not account for any errors. GWAM is the overall typing speed regardless of how many
errors you make. GWAM is often use as a measurement for users who are learning to type and is later
replaced by WPM.
GWAM can be calculated by typing text from an alternate source for 3-5 minutes and taking the amount
of words divided by the minutes. For example, if you typed 400 words in five minutes, GWAM is
calculated by dividing 400 by 5, resulting in 80 GWAM, hence, 400/5=80.
There are different techniques you can do to improve your typing skills. Below is a short list of different
ideas and recommendations you can do to help improve your typing. Keep in mind that most people are
not going to be able to improve their typing speed overnight.
Learn to type the proper way (no typing with one or two fingers.) Your fingers should be on the home
row keys, which are A, S, D, and F with the left hand and J,K,L and ; with the right hand. If you’re on a
non-English keyboard or a non-QWERTY keyboard, the home row keys may change.
A. Try not to look at the keyboard while typing. Not looking at the keyboard is usually hard for most
people, but it is a skill that should be learned. Not having to look at where the keys are on a keyboard
can dramatically improve the speed of your typing. If you need help learning to not look at your hands,
try putting a large piece of paper over your hands, or put stickers on each of the keys.
B. Make your posture at the computer is right. For example, sit in an upright position with both feet flat
on the floor and relax.
3. CHAT
Online chat can be a great place to learn to type and is also usually fun at the same time,
provided you use proper capitalization, punctuation and do not use chat slang
6. Type pages of a book, letter, or any other page with lots of text
Is a great way to help you improve your typing of unfamiliar words.
Alternatively referred to as NWPM, which is short for net words per minute. It is the same as the
GWAM, minus any error. For example, if you typed 400 words in five minutes; divide 400 into 5 to get
80 GWAM. If you had errors while typing, it is he number of errors divided by the time you typed. If
you made 10 errors your error rate is 2 errors a minute ( 10/5=2 ). To get the final value subtract 2 from
80 to get a 78 NWAM.
Calculating your typing speed is fairly easy. At its most basic, it’s just how many words you type
in a minute. Of course, you must account for errors in your final words per minute, but it is simply a
matter of timing yourself and counting words.
Simply count all typed entries and divide by five to get the number of words typed. To give an
example, if you typed 200 characters in 1 minute, your net WPM typing speed would be ( 200
characters/5)/1 minute=40 WPM. If you typed 200 characters in 30 seconds your net speed would be
(200/5)/0.5=80 WPM
Practice typing as much as you can. Type a lot, type tests, practice typing tests. Improve your
words per minute typing results and often test your typing speed
