FLUID MACHINERY (M)

PART-A
Answer all questions (each question carries 4 marks).

1. Write short notes on Hydraulic machines.

2. Derive expression for force exerted by a Jet on a Stationary Inclined Flat plate.
3. Draw the velocity triangle for a Jet striking a moving curved vane at one of the tips and
name each component in the velocity triangle.
4. Write short notes classification of Hydraulic Turbines.
5. Obtain the condition for maximum efficiency of a jet striking a series of vanes.

PART-B
Answer any 2 questions (each question carries 10 marks).

6. Obtain force exerted on a series of Radial curved vanes and efficiency of the radial curved
vanes with the help of Velocity Triangle.
7. A jet of water having a velocity of 15m/s strikes a curved vane which is moving with a
velocity of 5m/s. the vane is symmetrical and it so shaped that the jet is deflected through
120°. Find the angle of the jet at inlet of the vane so that there is no shock. What is the
absolute velocity of the jet at outlet in magnitude and direction and work done per unit
weight of water? Assume the vane to be smooth.
8. Obtain the expression for force on a stationary curved plate and when the plate is moving in
the direction of jet. Assume jet strikes at the curved plate at the centre.
9. A jet of water having a velocity of 35m/s impinges on a series of vanes moving with a
velocity of 20m/s. the jet makes an angle of 30° to the direction of motion of vanes when
entering and leaves at an angle of 120°. Draw the triangles of velocities at inlet and outlet
and find
a) The angle of vanes tips so that water enters and leaves without shock.
b) The work done per unit weight of water entering the vanes.
c) The efficiency.
