There are 3 types of killing in Islam; deliberate man slaughter, semi deliberate

man slaughter and killing by mistake. The first type is when a person kills another
deliberately by what kills normally such as burning, poisoning, stabbing or
strangling a person etc. The penalty is up to the relatives of the victim. They can
demand execution as life for life. They may spare the killers life and take the
blood money instead which is the equivalent to 100 camels. The 3rd and best option
is to forgive for the sake of Allah. It is noteworthy to say that there is no
expiation of freeing a slave or fasting 2 months on the murder as the crime is too
serious to be expiated by that.

The 2nd type of killing is semi-deliberate killing. This is the result of something
that doesnt kill usually. For example, throwing a fist or hitting someone with a
stick or throwing him with a small rock. The 3rd type of killing is the one made by
mistake. For example, fatalities in car accidents where the driver was sleepy or
his car was not in good condition and people died because of that. Both; the 2nd
and 3rd types, the killer must either free a slave or fast two consecutive months
as expiation. The family of the deceased is given the choice between taking the
blood money and forgiving him for the sake of Allah. If the killing was by sheer
mistake and the man had nothing to do with it, there is neither blood money nor
expiation. For example, if a person was driving to the speed limit and was alert
and someone threw himself in front of his car and died, there is nothing on the
driver
