B. Company Profile:
Manila Water Company, Inc. is the exclusive provider of water and used water
services to over six million people of the East Zone of Metro Manila and the Rizal
company holds exclusive right to provide water and used water services to the eastern
side of Metro Manila under a Concession Agreement between the Company and
Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System in August 1997 for a period of 25 years
to expire in 2022. The company provides watr treatment, water distribution, sewerage
and sanitation services to the people of the East Zone of Metro Manila.
C. Nature of Company:
D. Company Observation:
The company has new and old facilities dating back to 1937 but the old equipment
was replaced by modern tools for better monitoring but some were kept for display. The
company boast The Asset Platinum Award for Excellence in Environmental, Social and
Governance Practices of 2018 and they Rank 2nd in the top 50 ASEAN Publicly Listed
Companies in Governance which means the working environment there is top notch and
from what we observed the employees that we met were quite enthusiastic with their jobs.
The company starts in coagulation and flocculation with alum of the water that they
mainly source from the Angat Dam located in Norzagaray, Bulacan. The colloids will
clump together to form flocs that will pass through large pools called settling basins for
sedimentation process which will let the heavy flocs to settle at the bottom. The clarified
water will then pass through several filter beds to remove microscopic impurities and after
that they will we chlorinated to kill off bacteria before distributing the water to the masses.
The company has sewerage services which they will connect your home to or they
collect your septage from your home’s septic tanks. The water that they will collect here
will undergo screening to remove large solids then it will undergo primary sedimentation
where they let large sediments settle before undergoing aeration where blowers supply
oxygen to sustain the bacteria responsible for decomposition of pollutants. The aerated
water will undergo secondary sedimentation to separate the biological flocs then they will
disinfect it with sodium hypochlorite to remove harmful organisms before they dispose it
E. Reflections
Coagulation with alum. Their process for their clean water starts with coagulation
with alum which will neutralize the colloids that are under van der walls forces so that they
will clump together for form flocs which then will become heavier and settle to the bottom
B. Company Profile:
Tanduay Distillers Inc. is one of the oldest and biggest brands in the distilled spirits
category in the Philippines with a 99% share in the rum category. It has 5 production
facilities with the HQ in Manila, Barcolod Plant, Cabuyao plant and the El Salvador Plant.

The Cabuyao plant of the company. The processes introduce were the ageing
process where they store the distilled alcohol in ageing barrels in a controlled warehouse
to get that distinct Tanduay rum kick in their products. The aged alcohol will undergo
batch mixing in large agitated tanks to the company’s rum recipes. The last process will
be bottling. The bottling process is as follows: loading and bottle feeding, manual bottle
inspection, rinsing, filling operation, capping operation, labelling operation, coding, case
packing with carton and case weighing, stacking with DQA full pack inspection and
E. Reflections:
In our classes, we were taught the mechanism of fermentation and we even made
alcohol from different raw materials that contain sugar. The active ingredient used in
making alcohol is yeast or Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The yeast consumes the sugar
and alcohol and carbon dioxide is produced as a byproduct then the yeast dies when the
alcohol content reaches 17%. The percent alcohol can be further increased with a
distillation process.

D. Company Observation:
We weren’t given the chance to tour the company because of lack of time but they
did show a simple block diagram of their process and explained how their landfills are
made. The landfills use a modern land lining that prevents leachate leakage and provides
a leachate catchment through use of perforated pipes. The lining is composed of 5 layers
which are gravel, sand, geotextile, HDPE and Clay. The collected leachate is aerated
with enzymes in leachate ponds continuously for 30 days. Leachate should have a BOD
E. Reflections:
Since we didn’t really tour the company, we didn’t get to have that much insight on
the processes. The guides gave us an illustration of their process and just explained
briefly the function of those processes. Since Baguio city is not one of their clients maybe

C. Nature of company:
D. Company Observation:
The plant’s process starts from pumping out ground water and purifying it though
filters and softener exchanger columns to remove the hardness then it goes though
demineralization system which removes the remaining minerals. The water goes through
another filter, the AC filter, where iron, odor, and organic carbon are removed. To further
ensure water purity, the water goes through a cation exchanger, a CO2 remover, an anion
exchanger, and lastly a mixed bed exchanger. The last four process removes cations,
Then the water goes to the boiler where it is converted to steam that is used to power
turbines to produce electricity. The steam then goes to a cooling tower to recover the
water to be used again in the system. The boiler is heated using subbituminous coal and

NFA Rosales has two locations, one is where they store rice and the other is where
they mill the rice. The NFA plant visited are close to residential areas but since it is mostly
warehousing it not that hazardous to the community. The use of PPE’s is not observed in
the stock warehouses but they are required on the rice milling plant. The plants comply
with solid waste management guidelines and they also recycle. Rice husk that are
generally considered waste are incinerated and are sold as fertilizers and some are
pulverized and used as animal feed. The raw materials of the plant such as the rice stalks
are placed in sacks for it is in solid form. They are piled up according to their time housed
inside the plant. The market of the said agency is only with private distributors who tend
I saw the things we learned in our plant design class like the standard spaces
between machines in a plant and plant location selection. The plants are easy to get to
province when it comes to rice, this means that Pangasinan produces more than what it
can consume and it is known as one of the largest rice producers in the country.

The ABS - CBN Corporation's history can be traced from two companies' history,
namely Alto Broadcasting System (ABS) and Chronicle Broadcasting Network (CBN). At
first, ABS and CBN are two established, independent companies that give the Filipino
community different kinds of service. On the 1st of February, 1967 these two independent
corporations became one and renamed once as ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation and
C. Nature of company:
D. Company Observation:
To bring smiles to the heart of the Filipino people media companies such as ABS-
CBN work hard to achieve their goals. To bring top notch service they strictly follow
processes in their production. First, they set up everything in the studio, from the lights,
props to the recording equipment. Then after checking everything they will start
rehearsing to practice the flow of the show and when the rehearsals are finished, they will
now start recording the show live. During the shows there is a central control room where
sound engineers tweak the sound, where the director gives cues and where the filming
Behind every enjoyable episode of your favorite show is a hard-working crew that
gives their all in providing the Filipino people joy in their hearts. Just like any company or
industrial plant they follow guidelines and there is a flow to the process in providing a
service or a product. The things that they use in their adjustments are similar to the
controllers that Chemical Engineers use in the plant. They fine tune every variable to
The 4-day 3-night trip was truly noteworthy. It gave me ideas on what industries I am going to
pursue once I step out into the world. It opened my eyes on the things that chemical engineers do in
the industry in making the lives of people more convenient. It gave me a purpose to do my best to
provide my services in the future when I become an engineer. The also taught me to cherish my friends
and schoolmates for this maybe the last trip we will be together.
On the technical side of things there are also a lot of things that I learned though this educational
tour.
The first plant we visited was NFA. It was mostly warehousing where they stored rice grains for
drying but on their other plant site, they had a rice milling plant. It was my first time seeing a rice mill of
that size and it was quite fascinating to see how the staple grain of the Philippines was milled and the
quality checks it undergoes before it goes to our markets. The next company was Metro Clark waste
management corporation. It is a modern landfill where they make use of German technology. Due to
their landfilling methods they can prevent odors that one might smell in normal landfills and recover
methane from our trash. Tanduay Corporation, the company taught me different things with regards to
alcoholic beverages. I was able to widen my understanding with regards to the ageing and blending
process for I thought that ageing is simply for wines. If given the chance I would like to work at Tanduay.
I already have an idea with regards to septage and sewage because of my internship, but with the plant
visit in Manila Waters it gave me a better understanding of the things that should be maintained. Though
ABS-CBN is not related to the field Chemical engineering I had fun there learning how they make the
shows that put smiles in the hearts of the Filipino people. It gave me an idea if ever I get tired of the
chemical engineering field, I can always be a primetime superstar. The last plant we visited was Asia
Pacific Energy Corporation. It was a coal fired powerplant located in Pampanga. I got to see how the
theories we learned in out thermodynamics class were being used in real life, from the ion exchange
columns in their water facilities to the turbines they use to generate electricity.

B. Reflections
The two seminars that really piqued my interest are the 8th National Chemical Engineering
Symposium and Tanduay Distillers. I have always wanted to work in the petrochemical industry
and the 8th National Chemical Engineering Symposium gave me an idea on the work that I wanted
to pursue. From the drilling from an oil rig in the middle of the sea to the distillation column in the
refinery it taught me different things that chemical engineers have to do to provide energy to the
masses. Tanduay Distillers inspired me to also look into other fields in Chemical Engineering. The
thought of making liquor made excited in the path that I will be making for myself. It was the most
fun of all the seminars that I have attended. The Petrochemical and Spirits industry are similar
because both have distillation in their processes and maybe that why they pique my interests.
