PROBLEM SOLVING
a) A three-story building is being designed for the northern part of the Luzon. This building is
located on a soil profile that has an average shear wave velocity of 700m/s. There are two
known seismic sources that can affect the site. Both are capable of producing moment
magnitude greater than 7.0. The surface projections of these fault planes are shown below.
The resisting system of the structure is composed of steel ordinary moment resisting frames
and steel ordinary braced frames along the same axis. The structure consists of five bay
frames parallel to the direction of the seismic force (transverse direction) and six bay frames in
the longitudinal direction. Horizontal dimension of bay frame is 3m. Height of the first story is
3.4m. No setback along the longitudinal direction.
Assume that Equivalent Static Lateral Load Procedure is applicable. Determine the response
of the structure.

NOTE: In a single story building when the lateral force is determined at base level (i.e. , the
base shear), and for multistory structures where the lateral force includes an allowance for the
mass of all walls, it is appropriate to include all walls in the calculation of the center of mass.
