Driveab i l ity is a term that i n general descri bes vehicle performance on the road . D riveabi l ity problems for an engine
can be caused by several d ifferent factors . Some of the factors are e n g i n e-related and some are not. Before
tro u b leshooti ng it is i m portant to determ i ne the exact co m plaint and whether the e n g i n e has a real driveab i l ity prob lem
or if it sim ply does not meet d river expectations.
Low power is a term that is used i n the field to describe many d ifferent performance p roblems. Low power is defi ned
as the i nabi l ity of the engine to prod uce the power necessary to move the vehicle at a speed that can be reasonably
expected under the g iven con d itions of load , g rade, w i n d , and so o n .
Poor acceleration o r response is d escribed a s t h e inabil ity o f the vehicle t o accelerate satisfactorily from a stop o r
from t h e bottom o f a g rade . It can also b e t h e lag i n acceleration d u ri n g a n attem pt t o pass or overtake another vehicle
at conditions less than rated speed and load . Poor acce leration o r response is d ifficult to troubleshoot since it can be
caused by several factors .

S hop T a l k:
D riveab i l ity is a term that i n general describes vehicle performance on the road . D riveab i l ity problems for an engine
can be caused by several d i fferent factors . Some of the factors are engine-related and some are not. Before

Low power is a term that is used i n the field to descri be many d ifferent performance problems. Low power is defi ned
as the i nab i l ity of the engine to produce the power necessary to move the veh icle at a speed that can be reasonably
expected u nder the given cond itions of load , g rade, wind, and so on. With ind ustrial eq u i pment, low power m i g ht
relate to the i n ab i l ity of the eq u i pment to pick u p or maintain load .
Poor acceleration or response is described as the i nabil ity of the veh icle to accelerate satisfactorily from a stop o r

• Engine R u n s Rough at I d l e
Shop T a l k:
Operational is a term that i n general descri bes vessel performance on the water. Operational p roblems for an engine
can be caused by several d i fferent factors . Some of the factors are engine-related and som e are n o t . Before
troubleshoot i n g , it is i m portant to determ i n e the exact com plaint and whether the engine has a real operational
problem or if it s i m p ly does not meet owner expectations.
Low power is a term that is used i n the field to describe many d ifferent performance p roblems. Low power is defi n ed
as the inabil ity of the engine to prod uce the power necessary to move the vessel at a speed that can be reasonably
expected under the g iven environ ment.
Poor acceleration or response is described as the inabil ity of the vessel to accelerate satisfactorily from a stop. It can
also be the lag in acceleration at cond itions less than rated speed and load . Poor acceleration or response is d iffic u lt
to troubleshoot, si nce it can be caused by several factors.

Shop Talk:
D riveabi l ity is a term that i n general descri bes veh icle performance on the road . Driveab i l ity problems for an engine
can be caused by several d i fferent factors . Some of the factors are engine-related and some are not. Before
troubleshooti ng, it is i m portant to d eterm i n e the exact complaint and whether the engine has a real d riveab i l ity prob lem
or if it sim ply does not meet d river expectations.
Low powe r is a term that is used i n the field to describe many d ifferent perform ance p roblems. Low power is defi n ed
as the inab i l ity of the engine to prod uce the power necessary to m ove the veh icle at a speed that can be reasonably
expected u nder the g iven cond itions of load , g rade, wind, and so on. With i n d ustrial eq u i pment, low power m i g ht
reference the inabil ity of the eq u i pment to pick u p or mai ntai n l oad .
Poor acceleration or response is described as the inabil ity of the veh icle to accelerate satisfactorily from a stop or
from the bottom of a g rade . It can also be the lag i n acceleration d u ring an attem pt to pass o r overtake another ve hicle
at conditions less than rated speed and load . Poor acceleration o r response is d ifficult to troubleshoot si nce it can be
caused by several factors .

The Fuel Consu m ption - General I nformation section of this manual and Trou bleshooti ng Excessive Fuel
Consu m ption , B u l leti n 3666094, m ust be referenced prior to any trou b l eshooti ng being performed on a customer's
engine.
The cause of excessive fuel consu m ption is d ifficult to diagnose and correct because of the potential n u m ber of factors
i nvolved . Actual fuel consu m ption problems can be caused by any of the fol l owi ng factors :
• Engine factors
• Veh icle factors and specifications
• Enviro n mental factors
• D river tec h n i q u e and operating practices
• Fuel system factors
• Low power or d riveabi l ity p roblems.
Before troubleshooti n g , it is i m portant to determ ine the exact com plaint. Is the complaint based on whether the
p roblem i s real o r perceived , or does not meet d river expectations? The Fuel Consu m ption - Customer Complaint
Form is a val uable l ist of q u estions that can be used to assist the service tec h n ician i n d eterm i n i n g the cause of the
problem. Complete the form before troubleshooting the com p l a i nt . The fol l owi ng are some of the factors that m u st
be considered when troubleshooti ng fuel consumption com plaints.
• Excessive i d l i n g t i m e : I d l i n g the engine can use from 0.5 to 1 . 5 gallons per hour depending on the engine i d l e
speed .
• Veh icle Aerodynam ics : The largest single power req u i rement for a truck is the power needed to overcom e air
resistance. As a general rule , each 10 percent red uction i n a i r resistance resu lts i n a 5 percent i ncrease i n m i l e per
gal l o n .
• Rol l i n g Resistance: Rol l i n g resistance is the second largest consumer o f power on a truck. The type o f t i re and
tread design h ave a sizeabl e effect on fuel economy and performance. Changi n g fro m a bias ply to a low p rofi le
rad ial tire can red uce rol l i n g resistance by about 36 percent.
• Enviro n mental and Seasonal Weather Changes: There can be as much as 1 to 1 . 5 m i l e per gallon d ifference i n fuel
cons u m ption , depen d i n g o n the season and the weather con d itions.
• Truck Route and Terrai n : East and west routes experience almost conti n ual crosswinds and h ead winds. Less fuel
can be used on north and south routes where parts of the tri p are not o n ly warmer, but have less wind resistance.
• D river Tech n i q u e and Operating Practices: A 1 m i l e per hou r i ncrease i n road speed equals a 0 . 1 m i l e per gallon
increase i n fuel consu m ption. This means that increasing road speed from 50 to 60 m ph w i l l result i n a loss of fuel
m i leage of 1 m pg .
• Result o f a Low Power or D riveabil ity P roblem : A n operator wi l l change d rivi ng style t o compensate for a low power
or d riveability problem . Some thi ngs the d river is l i kely to do are (a) shift to a h i g h engine rpm or (b) run on the
d roop cu rve i n a l ower gear instead of u psh ifting to d rive at part-t h rottle cond itions. These changes i n d rivi ng style
will i ncrease the amount of fuel used .
Add itional veh icle factors , vehicle specifications and axle al i g n ment, can also affect fuel consu m ption . For add itional
i nformation on tro ub l eshooti ng fuel consu m ption complaints , refer to Troubleshooting Excessive Fuel Cons u m ption ,
