Essential editor’s letter

MAY 2020

Welcome In uncertain times our home becomes our refuge more than ever,
a place of safety and comfort to retreat to and be grateful for. In the
current situation, while our movements are restricted and we withdraw
into our private spaces, projects might have to go on hold, but what
we don’t lose is the chance to let our imaginations run free.
The thing I have always loved about magazines is their ability
to transport us into another world: how looking at their beautiful pages
and reading the stories of other people’s challenges and triumphs can
inspire us in our own lives and give us new ideas of things to try. I can’t
think of anything more helpful in pepping us up at the moment than
a bit of escapism and a space in which to look at lovely things and think
happy thoughts. And who knows, while spending more time at home,
maybe we’ll have a chance to get some decorating done.
This month’s issue is filled with interiors to feed your imagination
and provide a tonic against bad news. Starting on page 26 with Best
Room in the House, we bring you 57 pages of the most gorgeous real-life, professionally-designed
kitchens around, including this wonderful story of how a barn was turned into a dream kitchen with
views out to the coast.
To learn about the new trend for kitchens designed with freestanding rather than fitted units,
turn to page 85 for Easy Does It, while from page 93 we introduce you to the cleverest technology
in Think Smart.
Our indulgent bathrooms section, beginning on page 99, and our beautiful bedrooms section,
from page 123, are packed with beautiful things to covert and ideas for upgrades and improvements.
And while we’re on the subject of flights of fancy, don’t miss Dressed to Impress on page 131, where
you’ll discover that a dressing room isn’t as outlandish an idea as you m ay h
may have thought.
Stay well dear readers.

PROFILE

Abigail Ahern TELL US ABOUT THE ABIGAIL AHERN X HERRINGBONE KITCHENS

RANGE… Think beautifully designed cabinetry that
is a modern take on the traditional English Shaker
The queen of dark interiors has kitchen: flat-front units with fuss-free lines, and the
option to paint it in any colour, which you would
teamed up with Herringbone not normally get at this price point. The cabinetry
Kitchens for a new collaboration is made in Herringbone Kitchens’ workshop in
Canterbury and comes fully assembled, so any
kitchen installer can fit it for you. It was hugely
important for me to partner with a company
where craftsmanship is key, that considers its
materials (all woods are from sustainably

managed forests and a tree is planted for every
kitchen sold), and excels in quality and design.

The more open storage you have,

the better, as the eye is automatically
more interested and intrigued”
WHAT DID YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE WITH YOUR NEW KITCHEN? I wanted it to seamlessly and
beautifully integrate with the rest of my space. Often in open-plan areas the
kitchen does not gel. This kitchen, however, totally integrates – I’ve echoed
the colour palette, materials and lines with the rest of my space so when you
transition through from living to dining to kitchen nothing jars, everything flows.
TELL US ABOUT THE COLOUR THAT YOU CHOSE TO PAINT THE CABINETRY? The colour I’ve used
is Pickle from my own range. It’s soft, earthy and warm, a burnt caramelised,
toffee hue which looks so beautiful in kitchens, especially when partnered with
black. It elevates everything it touches and I’ve done my signature ‘carry it onto
the walls and ceilings’ trick so it feels super luxurious.
WHAT WAS THE SPACE LIKE BEFORE? I had wall-mounted cabinets, which I’ve replaced
with a beautiful long shelf. I’ve extended the island and added a pantry, and this
has made the biggest difference. Now I want to linger longer, from having a quick
cup of coffee in the space in the morning to conjuring up more adventurous dishes.
WHAT WAS IMPORTANT FOR YOU IN TERMS OF STORAGE? The more open storage you have,
the better, as the eye is more interested and intrigued. However, I still needed
to hide all the ‘ugly stuff’ like blenders, mixers etc, so more cabinetry on the
island and a pantry was my saviour.

U ntil June last year, every time Janette Pittock stepped into the garage of
her family’s home near Colchester in Essex, she felt a sense of frustration.
The room where her engineer husband Duncan worked on his classic
traction engines was a 16th-century timber-frame barn with stunning views
of the countryside and the sea beyond. With a pair of barn doors that opened
the space up to the garden, it was clearly the best room in the house and it
would, Janette knew, make a great kitchen.
‘We were in our twenties when we bought the cottage and the barn,’ she explains,
‘and they were in a state of collapse after the great storm of 1987. We did them up, but
it took ten years of me moaning at Duncan before he agreed we could move the kitchen
into the barn.’
Having identified Davonport’s Shaker-style Tillingham as the design of her dreams,
Janette invited Richard Davonport to help them transform the barn. ‘By fully glazing
the gable wall, we could enjoy the views from our bedroom as well as in the kitchen,’ she
says. And in place of the concrete floor, Janette sourced stone flags at a local reclamation
yard. ‘I love the look, but if we were to spill anything, the stone would stain so we take care
not to.’
While a carpenter worked on the gable end, Richard tailored the Tillingham to fit
Janette and Duncan’s brief. ‘My old Aga had to be at the heart of the design, and I also
wanted a coffee machine and a plate drawer,’ says Janette. ‘Duncan and our interior
architect daughter Faith suggested putting sockets inside the chopping block unit. Faith
also helped us to choose the colour and material palettes, as well as designing the lighting
scheme. If it had been left to me, I’d have simply installed loads of spotlights.’
Although problems with the argon glass for the gable wall meant the project ran over
both time and budget, the combination of family and kitchen designer worked well, says
Janette. ‘We managed everything ourselves. The delays and living on site were awful,
especially over Christmas, but this is our forever home, so we didn’t skimp and everything
looks so beautiful now. It was all worth it.’ EKBB

S earching for a larger home, close to where they were

living in North London, Emily and Richard Stuart
found an ideal project. ‘We bought the house two
years ago and began a full refurbishment, including
digging down to create a new basement for a big
playroom,’ says Emily, an interior designer and mum
to the couple’s two children.
As part of the project, Emily and Richard, who works
in fashion, reconfigured the layout of the Edwardian
terraced house to create a super-spacious family home, now with
five bedrooms spread over four floors. The kitchen stayed where it
was, complete with its existing side return extension with sloping
glass ceiling, but now with an added atrium next to the dining area
and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors out to the garden. Moving
the utility room to the new basement and the cloakroom to under
the stairs, the kitchen space is now larger. ‘The space felt awkward
before, without a comfortable area for a dining table,’ says Emily.
‘It now has a much more successful layout with spaces for eating,
cooking, socialising and relaxing, while the atrium allows lots of
natural light into the rear of the room, which previously felt gloomy.’
Emily and Richard chose Humphrey Munson to design the
kitchen. ‘I’d lived with a creaky, collapsing old kitchen in our
previous home for seven years,’ she says. ‘This time I wanted
something made of real wood that would last for ages. I looked at
lots of kitchens that felt too modern and cold, and others that were
so trendy I felt they would date too quickly. The Humphrey
Munson designs were smart, timeless and beautiful, but still
MIXING IT homely and warm.

ay-to-day family life was

what inspired the Hilliers
to embark upon an entire
renovation of their house in
Guildford. Juliet, a general
practitioner, and her management
accountant husband Paul live in this five-bedroom 1930s
property with their children Frank, nine, and Chloe, seven,
and had been living there for four years before work began.
‘We decided to add a two-storey rear extension and undergo
an overall update,’ explains Paul. ‘The whole project took
around nine months, so we lived off-site for most of that.’
While the existing kitchen had been in a good condition,
the layout consisted of separate rooms, making it difficult to
spend quality time together as a family. ‘As we have young
children, we planned to combine the kitchen, dining and
living space,’ says Paul. ‘We also wanted to better open the
room to our large rear south-west-facing garden.’
The couple worked with an architect, who helped come
up with an initial layout – including the wide, multifunctional
island the family could socialise around. Having spent time
researching kitchens online and in magazines, Juliet and Paul
had a clear idea as to how the space should look and work.
‘We wanted a smart but informal café-like feel to it.’
After discovering a Harvey Jones showroom within
walking distance of their home – conveniently located, as they
needed to visit several times – Juliet and Paul opted for one
of the company’s kitchens. The team there were on hand to
refine the couple’s initial design. ‘Being tall, I felt the
recommended addition of drawers instead of cupboards
beneath the work surface was worthwhile,’ says Paul, ‘and
Juliet loves the easy access to cooking equipment.’
In the kitchen zone, contemporary patterned tiles help to
distinguish the area from the rest of the space. ‘The benefit
of a busy pattern is it hides the by-products of a busy kitchen,’
explains Paul. ‘The flecks of yellow brighten things up a little
and the tiles gave us the opportunity to echo the colours
throughout the space, pulling the whole scheme together.’
Open wooden shelving, coupled with underlighting, and
a wood profile on the island help to bring warmth into the
kitchen. And there’s plenty of surface space on which Juliet
and Paul can prepare dinner while the children sit at the
breakfast bar. ‘We even have an office area at the end of the
kitchen,’ says Paul. ‘It’s out of the way, but close enough to be
able to do things like research recipes, holidays or general
admin while cooking – or, if someone else is cooking, you can
still chat.’ The result is a functional and stylish kitchen-living-
diner that the whole family can enjoy together. EKBB

an alternative design. Weirdly enough, they realised that they
had designed the cupboards here in 1998!’
As an interior designer herself, Charlotte had a clear idea
of what she wanted and worked with Craig Matson at Roundhouse
to rework the kitchen design. Before this could be done, however,
the space needed a few structural changes. ‘There was a PVC
lean-to ceiling down the side of the kitchen, which also went round
into the conservatory, and the RSJs came down to give the kitchen
many different ceiling heights, which made the kitchen dark in
some areas,’ explains Charlotte. ‘Working with Ariel Klein at Ask
Renovations, we lifted parts of the ceiling up into the floor above
and put in lantern-style roof lights to give the ceiling one height.’
Craig and Charlotte decided to rebuild the mantel above the
cooker and add niche storage either side. A new island was then
designed to house the wine cooler, dishwasher and the sink. All the
old cupboards had their runners changed to make them function
better and two new larder cupboards were built to mimic the
existing design. A Caesarstone worktop was chosen to
complement the shades of grey paint used on the island and units
and an existing cupboard with glass doors was kept and repainted.

WHAT WERE THE MUST-HAVES IN THIS KITCHEN? Super-size,

high-functioning appliances for a family who love to cook
and entertain; a sociable breakfast bar where they could
sit and chat with a coffee or use their laptops; and a large
wine fridge. The wine fridge is recessed into the wall and
I suggested the black glass display unit to match it in
height. We have picture-framed the whole unit in the same
material as the kitchen and it has colour-tuned LED
lighting depending on the time of day, creating both a
functional feature and something with wow factor.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE ON A SEPARATE BREAKFAST BAR?
Sometimes an island becomes so big it feels like you’re
running a marathon to get around it! Here they had
enough space for an independent breakfast bar, which
means they sit and face each other, so it's actually very
sociable. It’s also less likely to become a dumping ground;
plus, if you’re on your laptop or reading the paper, you’re
away from the island, which is a busy place with the sink
and hob.
HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE MATERIALS? The worksurface is
Dekton, which is completely heat- and scratch-proof with
a lovely finish so you’re not dealing with streaks. The tall
units are strong and robust, as well as being textured, so
good at hiding fingerprints. Then you’ve got the shiny
island, which helps reflect light and gives contrast to the
tall units. I love how a shiny kitchen changes colour all the
time. During the day, it looks lighter, reflecting bright
sunlight, but in the evening it takes on a darker tone.

itted cabinetry has been a popular choice in

our kitchens since the 1950s, but there’s now
a growing trend for a more easy-going
mix-and-match aesthetic, one which weaves in freestanding
elements such as larders and dressers. ‘High-quality pieces
that can be moved around or repurposed are becoming
increasingly attractive,’ says Jacinta Pratt, senior kitchen
designer at John Lewis of Hungerford. ‘In part, it’s due to concerns
for the environment, but also trends are moving away from the
uber-polished to a more relaxed approach.’
Jane Stewart, design director at Mowlem & Co, agrees. ‘There’s
a movement towards honesty of material and design. Mixing
things up with the odd heirloom piece feels more handpicked and
gives a home character.’ While customers still rely on wall-to-wall
units with a continuous worktop for practicality, ‘a fitted kitchen
wrapped around a room can be overpowering,’ says Neil
Stafferton, design manager at British Standard. ‘Freestanding
items help break this up and add scale, texture and grit.’
Stand-alone elements bring practical benefits too, as Richard

CO-FOUNDER AND DESIGN DIRECTOR,
BATH BESPOKE KITCHENS balance to the room

What did the client outline in their brief ? They wanted a functional family
kitchen for cooking and entertaining. The initial brief was for the furniture to
look as if it had been found in a skip in Paris! The focus was on practicality with
plenty of storage and freestanding units, including a flexible rolling island that
would adjust to the family’s needs. We aimed to bring together form and function
along with a distinctive rustic character in keeping with the Victorian property.

Were there any challenges along the way? In order to achieve the desired
weathered look, the oak had to be antiqued to just the right point to achieve
a rustic patina. It was an intricate process to ensure consistency throughout.
The design included 65mm oak worktops, which had to be carefully installed to
ensure the levels remained true once the oak had settled into its surroundings.

What is the key to achieving a beautiful and practical look? Freestanding

pieces offer the opportunity to break up the space and for the use of different
materials to bring character and a distinctive identity. Consider the context
and function of the room and think about why a freestanding design may be
better. Do you need flexibility? Are you looking to break up the area? Will it
bring the look you want more effectively? Design authenticity is crucial in
period properties to keep the aesthetic narrative consistent.

There’s great news for keen cooks out there, and even those who are less

technology on your side. This means that if you haven’t already embraced
smart appliances, now’s the time to start shopping. 'Look for products

CLEVER COOLING
A fridge freezer is now capable of so much more than just being somewhere to store food,
with many models letting you check supplies and keep on top of food waste with internal
cameras that you can access via your phone. The Samsung Family Hub has taken refrigeration
to the next level and evolved into a kind of tech centre for the whole household – you can
leave messages for the kids when you want to give them reminders or find inspiration with
the Meal Planner when you’re running out of ideas. 'Additionally, we’ve seen that voice
assistants have become increasingly popular,' says Dan Harvie, vice president of Samsung UK

an extra layer of functionality and flexibility to an already unique product.'

oldness and calm were the watchwords for
Laura and James Parker’s new guest suite.
Raising two young children, running a
recruitment firm, and caring for two energetic
golden retrievers are all immensely rewarding,
but often highly draining tasks. So when the
opportunity arose to develop their garage into a
guest bedroom and bathroom, they decided to deviate from the
farmhouse style of their Essex converted barn and go all out on creating
their dream art deco design, as Laura explains. ‘As it wasn’t going to be
invaded by dogs and kids, it could be completely indulgent!’
James was adamant he wanted a wet room with no visible shower
tray, while Laura was thinking style and shapes. ‘I fell in love with the
Crittall-style shower screen as soon as I saw it,’ she says. They came up
with a brief for a suite ‘harking back to the glamour and overall aesthetic
of the art-deco era’ and appointed senior designer Billie Towers at
Ripples to come up with a plan. ‘Billie delivered a fantastic design and
layout, I didn’t feel the need to change a thing.’
A monochrome palette was the obvious choice for getting across the
opulence and timelessness of the art deco style. ‘Originally I felt white
metro tiles were a bit overdone, but I’m really glad we used them,’ says
Laura. The diminutive size of the black and white marble mosaic tiles
used on the floor meant the installation process was slightly slowed
down, but given their importance to the end result, the Parkers were
willing to wait. ‘They were pivotal in achieving the look we wanted’,
confirms Laura.
Previous attempts to renovate bathrooms themselves had never
resulted in an entirely satisfactory outcome. ‘Having a designer and
excellent fitters made such a difference,’ says Laura, who sees her new
bathroom as a portal to the high-glamour days of the ’20s and ’30s. ‘We
love that it feels like a holiday in Manhattan when you step in here,’ she
says, ‘and even though it’s mostly for guests, we still see it as our escape!’

Wet rooms
The benefit of a walk-in shower area is it allows you to future-proof the bathroom, because
a low-level or seamless shower tray or flooring is easy to access for all ages and abilities.
Wet rooms tend to be spacious and not as confining as a cubicle, as well as offering an
ultra-contemporary look that can be personalised with colourful or patterned tiles and
on-trend brassware. The drawback is time, upheaval and money, as they will require
tanking (waterproofing), which will incur additional costs and disruption. Your installer
can advise you on plumbing with regard to the correct gradient for the waste. ‘A true wet
room means the shower area is flush with the floor level, and the drain is fitted into the tiled
floor,’ explains Yousef Mansuri, head of retail design at C.P. Hart. ‘Originally, this would
have been completely open without any glass, but for practicality in an everyday bathroom,
a simple fixed glass panel to create a ‘walk-in’ shower area has become the go-to.’

Choosing the right
SHOWER SYSTEM
Take time to assess the type of shower you need – electric,
which takes hot water on demand from the mains cold
supply; mixer showers that use hot and cold water
supplies, thermostatic to prevent the risk of scalding, eco
electric or mixer showers with limited water flow, and
digital with remote and even voice control. Showerhead
configuration is also something to consider. There are
concealed and exposed designs, fixed, handheld and
recessed ceiling mounted, amongst others. By planning
each element carefully, you’ll soon have the perfect shower
set-up to suit all your needs.

Shower cubicles
An enclosed area with a tray and glass surround is a more straightforward solution and
this is generally installed in addition to a bath. The drawback is that it will take up more
space, so it is best suited to larger family bathrooms – you can get the children bathed
and hair washed while you have a quick shower, keeping everyone happy. Installation
is a lot less complex than a wet room, which makes it less expensive and less hassle, and
you can still create a walk-in effect by choosing a single sheet of frameless toughened
glass and low-level surface solution. This also helps contain the water spray. For smaller SMALL WONDER

Over-bath showers
A great space-saving solution for smaller bathrooms, installing
a shower over the bath suits those who enjoy a long soak as well as
those who want a quick hair wash or a blast in a hot shower. Busy

ressing rooms have gone from being

a Stateside dream – Sex And The City’s
Carrie Bradshaw planted the seed – to poll
position on our interiors wishlist, and for good
reason. For starters, our lives are getting busier
by the second, so having a designated space for
clothing and accessories means our bedrooms can
remain calm and clear. Then there’s the growing
number of versatile and savvy storage solutions available,
making it easier to turn eaves, uneven walls and quirky corners
into something much more useful and luxurious – meaning we
don’t need American-style space to bring them into our homes.
FINE FOCUS LOFTY DREAMS ‘The popularity of dressing rooms is definitely growing

wardrobe to partially divide a large bedroom and create
a dressing-room area behind it, with a doorway within the run
of wardrobe doors. This space can then be fitted out to exact
requirements, using panels, modular shelving, mirrors,
pull-out or down storage options and lighting.’
Before planning your dressing area, carry out an inventory
of all your possessions including clothes, shoes and
accessories, and seasonal items, too. ‘This will provide a much
clearer picture of the storage options required,’ advises Andy
Briggs, interior designer at Spaceslide. ‘If you don’t have
a spare room for your dressing room, consider making use
of the empty space along a wall in your bedroom or an alcove.
Mirrored sliding doors can partition off the space, doubling
up as a full-length mirror and reflecting light around the room.’
You might find yourself re-considering an en suite in favour
of a dressing room – the dream scenario being both, in close
proximity to each other. ‘While bigger is better, dressing rooms
can start from 1.2m deep so you might not need to forego your
en suite,’ adds Andy. ‘If your household often has a queue for
the bathroom, an en suite would be the more practical option;
a dressing room is more suited to those who want to maximise
any extra space whilst adding value to their home.’ EKBB

DRESSING ROOM DOS AND DON'TS

• Do consider access and proximity to the bedroom. The

most successful dressing room I’ve planned was between
the bedroom and the bathroom.
• Don't presume your current wardrobes are making
efficient use of space. I always look at my clients’ existing
cupboards, then I plan short hanging to maximise storage
for most clothes. Next it’s long hanging, then shelves, drawers
and other pull-out specialist fittings such as display shelves,
ALL ANGLES BOTH WORLDS trouser presses and shoe rails.

drawers, and an area of display shelving provides stylish cover for those you don’t • Don’t be afraid to maximise storage right up to the ceiling.
Where practical and aesthetically pleasing, I always build
up as this also seals off any dust-collecting areas. However,
unless it is for long-term storage, creating storage space
above 2.4m is difficult to access, and it’s more cost-effective to
infill or leave open.
• Do consider using wardrobes to section off a spacious
bedroom. Often designers have difficulty planning larger
rooms because there might be a big floor area but not much
wall space. Using wardrobes as room dividers can be a
cost-effective way of creating more storage space.
• Don’t include an island unless you have the space to walk
freely around it, especially if it contains drawers adjacent to
opening wardrobe doors. If you do have space it will create
additional storage and you could experiment with counter
stools. A comfortable armchair that can be tucked away
underneath a vanity section also works well.

PLACE TO BE

Palácio
Príncipe Real
BLENDING MODERN TRENDS
WITH INHERITED FEATURES
CREATES A THEATRICAL
AND ELEGANT STYLE
THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING
AND ON TO THE TERRACE
WORDS Bethan Owen

T
his 19th-century palácio with its scenic gardens is an
oasis located in the heart of Lisbon’s trendy Príncipe
Real neighbourhood. This boutique hotel captures
the essence of intricate Moorish design with thoughtfully
sourced bespoke furniture. The original features of this
former family home have been restored to recreate the

1 decadent luxury of the past and combine them with

the comforts of modern life. Geometric pattern tiles
6
accentuate the romanticism throughout, while a creative
blend of period motifs and trendy modern quirks give
each of the spacious 28 bedrooms their unique character.
The bedroom schemes are unified by solid-wood flooring,
which allows the details of the spaces to shine.
