From Tool to Partner: The Evolution of Human-Computer Interaction

Jonathan Grudin, January 2017, Morgan & Claypool

This book aims to enable practitioners and researchers to position our work by
examining the history of HCI across computer science, human factors, information
systems, and library & information science, also touching on communication and
design. How did each of these fields contribute? When did they work together and
why did they more often remain apart?
There is a forward arc and some patterns that appear when we look closely over the
past. Understanding how these fields evolved and the forces underlying the patterns
can help us prepare for a future that will bring surprises.
