(1) Matrix and (2) Traffic Light System

Matrix System uses disease activity and patient attitude to determine current caries risk profile.  It is a
subjective analysis of information obtained from the patient/carer.

The Matrix can then be used as a way to help the practitioner plan as individualised caries management
program, using the matrix periodically to re-assess patient status.

Traffic Light System

The second component is the Traffic Light tool for recording modifying factors in dental caries.

- This process uses Red, Yellow and Green lights respectively to indicate high, medium or low risk areas.
FIVE categories comprising 14 factors are assessed-

1)  Saliva

2)  Bacteria

3)  Diet

4)  Fluoride

5)  Lifestyle (i.e. systemic disease, smoking)

Each category is then assigned a colour . The greater the number of RED LIGHTS, the greater is the
caries risk. The practitioner can then use this information as a planning tool for surgical/ non-surgical
intervention. This following chart is useful to explain to your patient about caries management in their
mouth.
