Forceps Extraction for Adult

A. General Objective :
Upon completion of this module, the student will
(1) identify and define the use of each forceps used for the extraction of
maxillary and mandibular teeth.
(2) demonstrate operator position in relation to the treatment areas of

the mouth.
(3) demonstrate the steps in a forceps extraction of the adult’s teeth.

B. Descriptive :
This module discusses how to use dental instrument correctly for
provision of equipment to work safely including dentist and dental nurse
in dental treatment procedure such as each forceps used for the
extraction of maxillary and mandibular teeth.
C. Characteristic of Student :
The second level student (semesters 3/4) passed the course PPAKG I.
D. Competence :
Student is able to apply of each forceps used for the extraction of
maxillary and mandibular teeth.
E. Indicator of Learning Target : The student has capability to
(1) demonstrate operator position in relation to the treatment areas of

the mouth.
(2) demonstrate the steps in a forceps extraction of the adult’s teeth.
F. Material :
Forceps are used for the actual removal of the tooth from its socket after it has
been slightly loosened with the elevators. The objective is to remove the tooth
without fracturing the root tips. The handles of forceps are designed for a palm
grasp position and may have a hook on one handle to provide additional
leverage by providing placement for the little finger. The beaks of the forceps
are designed to fit the convexity (curve) of the crown with the nibs of the
beaks placed onto the cementum of the tooth just below the cementoenamel
junction. The term universal means that the forceps may be used either on the
left or right side of one dental arch or in some instances that it may be used on
the maxillary or mandibular arch

maxillary and mandibular teeth.
2. identify and define the use of the specialized instrumentation for oral
surgery related to extraction of the permanent teeth.
3. describe the steps in a forceps extraction.

SE IE
IE = Instructor evaluation X = Criterion not met
Instrumentation : Forceps Extraction Kit
Forceps : Identify and define the use of each forceps as follow:
1. Maxillary anterior.
2. Maxillary premolar and molar.
3. Mandibular anterior.
4. Mandibular premolar and molar.
The specialized : Identify and define the use or the specialized instrumentation -
instrumentation for oral surgery related to extraction of the permanent teeth
as follow:
1. Elevators
- Periosteal Elevator.
- Root Elevator.
- Tooth Elevator.
- Apical Elevator.
2. Curette.
Procedure of forceps : State the procedure of forceps extraction as following:
extraction 1. the surgeon checks that there is adequate anaesthesia.
2. area of the extraction is swabbed with disinfecting solution.
3. using a periosteal/tooth elevator, if indicated, use a scalpel.
4. the beaks of the forceps are placed.
5. the tooth is luxated in the socket, when this is complete,
the tooth can be freely lifted.
6. if the root tip has fractured, use root picks/elevator to
remove the fragments.
7. if indicated, sutures are placed to close the surgical site.
8. the cheek is retracted and folded gauze is placed over the
extraction site and out toward the lips or cheek.
9. the patient is instructed to bite on the pack for at least 30
minutes to control the bleeding and to aid in clot formation.
Exchanging forceps in : 1. position of the dental assistant.
oral surgery 2. hold the forceps (grasp).
3. place the forceps to the operator’s hand.
4. release the forceps.
