Learning Outcome - Guitar

At the end of Year 2 students will also know:

 Major scales and minor scales (2 octaves - chromatically)


 Scale patterns (i.e. broken 3rds)
At the end of Year 1 students will know:  Blues and pentatonic scales
 The concepts of whole, half and quarter note rests.
 How to tune a guitar  The concept of sharp and flat notes.
 The names of the strings  Identify and play the notes F# and C# within the first 4 frets.
 The types of guitars – classical/steel string (acoustic)/electric  How to play a simple melody with eighth notes at a steady tempo
 The parts of the guitar (example: Frere Jacques, Minuet in G)
 Major scale (open & closed - 1 octave)  How to play a chord progression with the chords G7,C7,A7,D,E,A minor.
 Minor scale (open & Closed - 1 octave)  How to play simple eighth note strumming patterns with chord pairs.
 All 5 basic chord shapes  More power chords
 Introduction to power chords
 Understanding of time signatures and sub-divisions up to eighth notes
 How to read tablature
 How to read standard notation At the end of Year 3 students will also:
 Performance of basic tune
 Understand syncopated figures
 How to play and identify the natural notes on all six strings to the third fret.
 Recognize scale degree and relation to chord progressions (i.e. I - IV – V)
 The concepts of 3/4 and 4/4 time, pickup notes and ties.
 Know all basic open chords
 Identify notes on the musical staff from low E to high G on the third fret of first string.
 Identify and play dotted quarter note rhythms.
 How to play a simple melody with quarter, half, dotted half and whole notes at a steady tempo.
(examples: When the Saints go Marching In, Amazing Grace)  Identify the key signatures for C, G and D major
 How to play a short chord progression with G,C,D7 and E minor at a steady tempo  Understand the concept of syncopation.
 Play a simple syncopated melody (example: Jamaica Farewell) with a consistent
tempo.
 Play a basic syncopated chord strumming pattern in a 12 bar blues progression
with a steady tempo.
 Scales (Closed Position) – Major, minor, and blues in any key (2 octaves)
 More power chords
 Introduction to improvisation
 Introduction to full barre chords (major, minor, sevenths)
