INSTALLATION OF VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL ASSEMBLIES IN MAIN HOUSING

NOTE: Clean main housing of all foreign materials. Item 9, 51, & 72, shims are used
to adjust gear position and backlash. Install one each .007 and .015 shims (item 51) on
top of main housing. Place on each .007 and .015 shims (item 72). Insert vertical
assembly into main housing. (Please note that if you furnish the serial number of the gear
unit to us we will fax the original factory shim settings for your specific unit.)

Note timing marks on gear members, (x) if marked. Install two or more .015 shims (item
09) on stab bolts for horizontal installation. Insert horizontal assembly into main housing,
aligning timing marks. Install four cap screws (item 15) and tighten if backlash is felt. If
backlash is not felt, add sufficient quantity of shims to insure some backlash when cap
screws (item 15) are tightened. NOTE: Backlash of gears will be etched on gear members
as (B/L .008). DO NOT set at lower than minimum backlash etched on gears or more than
.016 over backlash etched on gears. The original backlash factory setting will be the
minimum backlash etched on the gear set plus + .005/.006". If the minimum backlash on
the gear set is .008", the factory backlash setting will be .013" to .014".

SETTING OF GEAR POSITION AND BACKLASH

Using some type of draw-bar or press, apply enough pressure, 1500-2000 pounds, to
thrust bearing (item 63). Using the horizontal shaft rotate gears two to three times to insure
seating of thrust bearing properly.

Check backlash with dial indicator using radius of gear/pinion (horizontal member) to
determine dial indicator position. (Example, 12" diameter gear, radius would be 6"--set
dial indicator 6" from center of horizontal shaft.)

Check backlash, if backlash is too little and or too much, shims (item 51, 72, & 9) will
have to be removed or added to set proper backlash. Also at this time check tooth contact,
if contact is not what is desired use shims (item 51, 72) either adding or removing to
position vertical gear member. The end play between bearing #39 and bearing #63 should
be +.002" to -.000". The end play between two vertical bearings can be measured by
lifting and lowering the vertical assembly with a hoist. Place a dial indicator on the radial
bearing carrier with the indicator point against the drive block. Lifting up and down on the
drive block will cause the dial indicator to display the measurement. Recheck backlash.

-3-
FINISHING ASSEMBLY OF GEAR DRIVE

If the backlash and gear tooth contact is properly set, remove horizontal assembly from
main housing. Install oil lines (3 each), previously noted as to positioning. Failure to do
so would result in gear drive damage.

Use a sealer (Permatex or silicone) between the heat exchanger item #7 and the radial
bearing carrier (item 8). Install heat exchanger (item 7). Install the clutch coupling #34
on the drive block #35 to make sure that the heat exchanger is centered on the radial
bearing carrier. Install cap screws (item 73), center heat exchanger (item 7) around drive
block /clutch coupling assembly and tighten cap screws. Install fan (item 32). Install cap
screws (item 33) and tighten. Install cover (item 5). Install cap screws (item 31) and
tighten. Install top cover #2 and cap screws (item 3) and tighten.

INSTALLATION OF NON-REVERSE ASSEMBLY ON HORIZONTAL ASSEMBLY

Invert horizontal assembly to stand on gear end of shaft. Install gasket (item 16).
Grease sprag assembly with good grade bearing grease. Install sprag assembly inside
outer race. Install over inner race on horizontal shaft. (The lock nut , lock washer, and oil
slinger may have to be removed to install the sprag element #85, and outer race #30.)
Install gasket (item 16). Install oil seal retainer (item 18) and oil seal over shaft being very
careful not to damage the seal on keyway. Install cap screws (item 19). At this time rotate
horizontal shaft clockwise. If cannot rotate without horizontal housing rotating, non-reverse
sprag assembly will have to be removed, inverted and installation procedures repeated.
Tighten cap screws (item 19), and rotate horizontal shaft in housing. If excessive drag or
tight spots noticed, loosen cap screws (item 19) and re-center outer race and sprag
assembly around inner race.

INSTALLATION OF HORIZONTAL ASSEMBLY TO MAIN HOUSING

Reach through the horizontal opening and install the oil pump drive gear item #68.

Slip horizontal housing onto stab bolts and insert into main housing. Align timing marks
of gears at this time. Install cap screws (item 15) and tighten.

Assembly of gear drive should be complete. Service with proper gear oil, be sure to fill
the horizontal reservoir at this time to insure immediate oiling of bearings on start up. This
can be done by tilting the gear drive forward towards the input shaft. When starting the
gear drive the first time after re-assembly, run slowly for about 10 minutes to assure that
the unit is oiling properly. A visual check can be made by observing oil returning from the
vertical assembly, visual oil returning from the inboard bearing, and oil flow to the gear
set. The oil flow may be observed from the inspection cover opening. After the inspection
cover is replaced, oil flow may be observed through the oil flow glass item #47.

Always use the proper tools and safety equipment.

The M26A 7:2 ratio has a 22.5" diameter gear set.

Check Backlash at approximately 3.125" radius from centerline of horizontal shaft. Place
dial indicator against the bar or attachment as shown. Gently rock the horizontal shaft
back and forth without rotating the vertical assembly. Place a threaded rod through the
vertical assembly from top to bottom to make sure that the thrust bearing is seated in its
cup in the bottom of the gear case. Check the backlash at 4 places around the circle. At
the position with the lowest reading of backlash, the backlash is set as follows. The gear
set is marked with a minimum backlash number - backlash is set using this “MBL” number
plus .005"-.006". Example: If the “MBL” is .010", you would set the backlash at .015" to
.016". Too much backlash normally does not cause a problem. Too little backlash does
cause a problem. Remember to set the backlash at the lowest original reading. The other
three check points will have more backlash that the setting you make at the lowest point
