Lesson Plan: Speaking


This lesson plan accompanies A2 Key, Test 1, Speaking, Parts 1 and Part 2, p72 to p74 and p125

This lesson is suitable for students coming towards the end of their A2 Key course

Lesson Goals
1. Tell the basic background information of an individual
2. Express and explain shopping choices
3. Describe basic food preferences and why

1. Warmer 10 mins

• Instruction 1
Put students into 5 groups and ask group 1 to think of as many jobs 4 mins Ss-Ss
as they can, group 2 as many countries as they can, group 3 as many
clothes and accessories as they can, group 4 as many types of food
they can, and group 5 as many free time activities as they can. You
could do an ABC race for these topic areas if you think your students
have the vocabulary. (i.e. Anorak, Belt, Cap…)

• Instruction 2
Regroup your students so that they can share their lists they 4 mins Ss-Ss
made during the previous activity. Write I’d like to...because ...and I
wouldn’t like to...because...on the board and ask students to talk to
each other about the four topics. I’d like to be an accountant
because, I like money. I wouldn’t like to be a nurse because I don’t
like blood, etc.

• Instruction 3
Ask students to look at their countries lists and work together to 2 mins Ss-Ss
name as many cities/towns in the countries as possible. Elicit their then S-T
ideas.

2. Main activities – Individual copies of Parts 1 and 2, p72 to 35 mins


p74 of the test book. Visual materials p125. Copies of
Resources 1 and 2 for each student.

Part 1, Phase 1

1. Tell students to look at p72 and find For UK ask, For non-UK 1 min S-T
ask and Back-up prompts. Elicit or tell students what these
terms mean.

2. Put students into groups of four or five. Tell them they are
going to roleplay Part 1, Phase 1 on p72. Tell them to cover
the backup prompt section and ask and answer the
examiner questions for students in the UK as themselves.

3. Regroup your students into groups of four and five and tell
them to repeat the role-play as a member of their family or
they can invent an identity.

Part 1, Phase 2

4. Write ‘the area where you live’ and ‘clothes’ and the words;
Where, What, How, Who, When and Tell me something
about…on the board. Put students into pairs and tell them
to think of a question for each question word on both
topics. (e.g. Where do you live, Who do you buy your
clothes with, Tell me something about your favourite
clothes, etc.) They should write these questions down on
some paper.

5. Re-pair your student's so that student A can ask student B
their questions on ‘the area where you live’ and student B
can ask student A about their questions on clothes.

6. Keep your students in groups of 4 and give them Resource 7 mins Ss-Ss
1. Ask them to look at p73. Tell them to cover the back-up
prompts and back-up questions and role-play Phase 2 as
interlocutor, assessor and candidate A and B. The student
playing the assessors role should simply mark good or not
bad on Resource 1.

7. Ask your students to give each other feedback on their 3 mins Ss-S
performance.

Part 2, Phase 1

8. Display p125 or refer students to this page in their books. 2 mins S-T
Elicit what each picture is: (e.g. fruit, burger and fries, cake,
pizza, vegetables). Elicit or tell students what they have to
do in this phase of the test (i.e. say what they like, why/why
not).

9. Cut up and give out Resource 2 to groups of three students S


2 mins
and ask each student to think of ideas to answer their
questions individually.

10. In their groups, tell them to ask their questions to each 4 mins Ss-Ss
other in a circle (i.e. A to B, B to C, C to A, etc.) Tell them to
record themselves on their phones or similar device.

11. Extension activity – Part 2, Phase 2 p74, Resource 3 cut ups 15 mins

Part 2, Phase 2

12. Put your students into pairs. Ask them to ask and answer 3 mins S-S
the Part 2, Phase two questions on p74 as if they are having
a conversation together.

13. Write up healthy, expensive, nice, popular, boring on the
board. Briefly elicit what could be described by these words

14. Put your students into four groups and give each group a
5 mins Ss-Ss
separate topic from Resource 3. Make sure each member
of the group gets the same topic card to make notes on (i.e.
group A jobs -outside/inside, group B food outside/inside,
etc.) Ask them to brainstorm some answers using the why?
/why not? prompts.

15. Re-group your Ss to ask and answer their topic questions 5 mins Ss-Ss
together

● A further activity or homework could be for students to


assess themselves, using Resource 1, on their performance
in Part 2, Phase 1 by listening back to the recording made in
class.
