1. Introduction
The HDL 250 is a most effective high pressure fire extinguisher. OERTZEN
fire extinguishers and accessories conform to relevant national and European
Safety standards which is guaranteed by the CE-symbol. The HDL 250 WS
has obtained the type approval of the German inspection authority in
charge “Institut der Feuerwehr Nordrhein-Westfalen”, certified under No.
P3-1/01 by the Ministry of the Interior (certificate is available on request).
• The packing materials (plastic foil, wood, cardboard boxes, nails etc.)
are potentially dangerous, should be kept away from children and
disposed according to environmental requirements.
All rights reserved. Any use in other than legally authorised cases requires the
prior written approval of ARNDT H. von OERTZEN (GmbH&Co).

2. Safety Instructions
This instruction manual to be read completely before initial start-up. If strictly followed,
no danger should occur.
This machine must only be run by qualified adult persons (firemen) who are fully
familiar with possible risks. “Directives for Liquid Blasters” (ZH 1/406) and operation
instructions “Working with Liquid Blasters” (BGV D 15) as well as instructions of the
fire-brigade to be followed.
The machine is not suitable for unattended operation and must be operated according
to specification. Protective clothing to be worn.
The water jet emerging from the spray pistol has a dangerous cutting effect. There-
fore the water jet must never be directed onto persons, animals or electrical installa-
tions in a distance of less than 1 m. It must never be used for cleaning of clothes,
footwear and the like. Be aware of torque and recoil. Ensure stable foothold.
The max. allowed pressure which is stated on the type plate must not be exceeded.
The safety/control valve opens, if the max. operating pressure is exceeded by more
than 10 % and returns the water back into the suction side of the high pressure pump.
The safety/control valve is workshop-set and sealed. Adjustment must not be
changed.
Unsuitable respectively defective high pressure hoses often cause severe accidents
during operation. Therefore high pressure hoses to be carefully inspected before
start-up and replaced by original OERTZEN equipment in case of damage. Use of
other than original OERTZEN equipment results in expiration of the EC Declaration of
Conformity, as well as of product liability and warranty.
Used or damaged high pressure hoses must never be repaired and reused but to be
replaced by original OERTZEN equipment.
Extinguishing pistols with delayed closing mechanism must not be used because of
risk of injuries.
The machine must not be run in areas jeopardized by fire or explosions. During
operation at filling stations “Technical for flammable liquids” (TfbF) to be observed.
4
Secure the machine against moving. It is equipped with a parking brake which must
be set during working.
During loading hoisting device to be fastened properly at jack rings. Ensure balanced
load distribution.
Repair work in the high pressure section of the machine (pump, hoses, piping) only to
be carried out by qualified personnel.
Only foam agents approved by OERTZEN to be used. Keep away from eyes.
Never unreel extinguishing hose while hand crank is swung out. Keep your hands out
of the working area of the hand crank. Keep a safety distance and take care that
clothes cannot be clutched by the crank.
This operation manual describes the operation of the HDL 250 WS basic design.
If OERTZEN FIRE-TEC accessories are used, refer to extra manual which is
attached hereto.

3. Configuration/Operation
The high pressure fire extinguisher HDL 250 is an electrically independent
machine to extinguish class A and class B fires by means of water atomised
under high pressure with the option of foam agent dosing. The extraordinary
efficiency of the high pressure fire extinguisher results from the atomisation of
the water at a working pressure of up to 250 bar. By atomisation the surface of
the water respectively foam agent solution is extremely extended so effecting
a rapid evaporation. The high extinguishing efficiency is based on the syner-
getic effect of heat extraction from the fire by evaporation and reduction of the
oxigen concentration by the steam. A significant advantage is the fact that
damage caused by water is practically avoided. The high pressure
extinguishing hose is steel-reinforced, heat resistant, extraordinarily light,
flexible and so easily manoeuvrable. It allows the rapid fire-attack in a distance
of 50 m from the HDL. The fire assault device allows the quick roll-over from
high pressure water mist to heavy foam to high pressure net water mist, as
required.
The high pressure fire extinguisher HDL mainly consists of a low speed high
pressure inline plunger pump which is driven by a low emission four stroke V-
motor. The motor is protected against dry-running by a low oil level cut-out
which stops the motor in case of low oil level.
The water is directed via filling valve with strainer into the vented water
storage tank, where it is taken via an Y-filter from by the high pressure pump
which boosts it – together with the diameter of the respective extinguishing
nozzle – up to required working pressure.
6
The machine is equipped with a circulation shut-off system and additionally
with a thermovalve, in order to protect the high pressure pump against
overheating. After closing the extinguishing pistol, the safety/control valve
opens and returns the circulating water into the suction line of the pump. If the
water temperature in this operating condition exceeds 60 °C, the thermovalve
opens, releases hot water and in parallel allows small amounts of cold water to
enter. When opening the extinguishing pistol again, adjusted working pressure
is generated immediately so that extinguishing can be continued without delay.
Fixed installation:
Installation module with 125 l water storage tank, foam agent supply from
external tank.
Mobile version:
Mobile unit on wheels with 125 l water storage tank, hoop guards, installation
fittings for DIN foam agent tank 20 l. Foam agent supply from external tank.

5. Mounting/Initial Installation
The HDL 250 to be mounted workmanlike in a way that all components can
easily be reached. The fire assault device to be easily accessible and the hose
to be quickly reeled-off.
The machine to be mounted by bolting the vibration dampers onto the vehicle
structure. The vibration dampers prevent vibrations of the machine from being
transferred to the vehicle.
Take care that machine components will not hinder e.g. the vehicles blinds to
be moved.
If, in order to save weight, the machine not to be started by its own battery but
by the vehicle’s battery, correct polarity, dimension and installation of power
cables to be guaranteed (power requirements: 12 V).
If the water supply to be done from an external water storage tank as per Fig.
1, the supply lines to have an inside diameter of 25 mm and to be suction
resistant.
In order to allow easy reeling up the high pressure hose, sufficient clearance
for the hand crank of the hose reel (approx. 200 mm) to be provided.
Sufficient headroom to be provided to allow filling of the water tank via the D-
connection.
12
Start-up/Shut-down
First Steps:
13
Operation
This operation manual describes the operation of the HDL 250 WS basic
design. If OERTZEN FIRE-TEC accessories are used, refer to extra
manual which is attached hereto.
If the motor in operational state and at correct oil level does not start
after several attempts, most likely the oil pressure is poor. In this case
disconnect the cable of oil pressure switch (at the male threaded flange
of the motor oil filter) upon start-up.
14
Extinguishing with DUPLEX Fire Assault Device (Standard)
By turning the DUPLEX fire assault device the following extinguishing modes
are possible:
Fire Class A: Spray mode (high pressure water mist or, by adding
foam agent, net water mist).
15
Extinguishing with TRIPLEX Fire Assault Device (Option)
By turning the TRIPLEX fire assault device the following extinguishing modes are
possible:
Fire Class A: Throw or spray mode (high pressure water mist or, by
adding foam agent, net water mist).
Fire Class B: Heavy foam (8-fold expansion rate), particularly for fire
class B to cover glowing fires.
The fire assault device to be turned to required mode at closed extinguishing pistol
only. The marks (32) on the nozzle tray will ease orientation.
16
In case of temperatures below freezing point, particularly note:
The low amounts of water in the high pressure hose may freeze and damage
the machine. Therefore work should not be interrupted unless fire is
extinguished.
In order to guarantee readiness for use in case of frost during fire watch a
continuous low water flow should be ensured as follows:
After work
Foam agents are corrosive. Residues have therefore to be flushed out of the
system as follows (keep in sequences):
17
Final Steps
• Place high pressure extinguishing hose in a straight line and check for
damage.
• For cleaning purposes pull high pressure hose through a moist cloth during
reeling up.
• Swing in hand crank (13), push it through the axle as far as possible in
order to avoid blockage during next reeling up. Lock hand crank (17) with
T-screw.
• Put extinguishing pistol (rapid-attack-device) (19) into holder (20) and lock
it.
Never unreel extinguishing hose while hand crank is swung out. Keep
your hands out of the working area of the hand crank. Keep a safety
distance and take care that clothes cannot be clutched by the crank.
18
6. Maintenance and Care
Any machine is only as reliable as maintenance is carried out.
19
Reduction Gear
Oil changes minimum every year.
Only OERTZEN OSP special pump oil to be used for the reduction gear and the
high pressure pump, otherwise warranty will expire.
Fuel Tank
Contents of fuel tank to be changed every year. Flush tank. Never store fuel in open
vessels. Never use matured fuel.

Warranty will expire in case of misuse of the machine, incorrect handling and
operation, poor maintenance.
20
Frost Protection I. – High Pressure Pump / Suction Line
b. Losen swivel (24) on extinguishing pistol (23) and remove fire assault
device.
c. Start motor and let run at low speed, adjust pressure regulating valve
(12) to a low value (counter-clockwise).
d. Open stop valve (23) so allowing the high pressure pump to suck in the
anti-freeze. As soon as the anti-freeze emerges from the extinguishing
pistol, the emerging stream to be directed into the anti-freeze vessel
(Frost Protection II: into the water tank filled with anti-freeze liquid) so
that the anti-freeze liquid is circulating through the system.
f. Open and close the stop valve (23) 10 times so that the entire pump
system is filled with the anti-freeze liquid.
21
Frost Protection II. – High Pressure Fire Extinguisher/Water Tank
If the unit with full water tank will be exposed to freezing temperatures during
transport/storage, there is a risk that the entire unit will freeze. Frost protection
can be carried out by adding calcium chloride scales CaCl2 77/80 %, however
the following limits to be observed:
