Appendix 5
Introduction Information to the Women

My name is Nyokabi Kamau, a lecturer at the Catholic University of Eastern

Africa. Currently, I am a doctoral student at the University of London, Institute of
Education. I am conducting a research into university women’s experiences with
HIV and AIDS, and generally to find out if their personal and private experiences
are taken into account when universities make policies and take action to deal
with issues. I am requesting you to share with me your experiences on this.

This will be done in form of a fairly relaxed conversation, and am kindly requesting
you to allow me to tape record the conversation to allow for accurate record of
our conversation and indeed to also allow us to talk without interruption of note
taking. The conversation should last about 45 minutes.

Kindly let me know the most convenient place where we can talk without
being interrupted. I will follow up with a telephone call to your office to
confirm a convenient time and place for the interview. In case you require any
further clarifications, please contact me on 0722-329420 or 4440184 or e-mail –
nyokabikamau2@yahoo.co.uk

Thanking you in advance

Yours truly

Nyokabi Kamau

NB: I used this letter as a guide to introducing myself to the women, either face to
face or on telephone. I did not send a letter to any of the women participants – but
I had prepared it just in case I was to need one.
