The elements in IA , IIA and IIIA groups ( except boron and hydrogen ) of the

periodic table are metals and tend to give electrons to reach an inert gas like electron
structure . These elements also have low electronegativities.

The elements in IVA , VA ,VIA and VIIA groups of the periodic table are
nonmetals and tend to gain or share electrons to complete their octets . They have quite
high ionization energies and electronegativities.

If a metal and a nonmetal are brought together, electrons are transferred from the
metal to the nonmetal producing a positively charged metal ion and negatively charged
nonmetal ion. The opposite charges of the ions cause them to be attracted to each other.
The electrostatic force between the oppositely charged ions holds the ions together and
is called IONIC BOND.
