Now, I want to talk about best management

practices. BMP is the methods or techniques

found to be the most effective and practical
means in preventing or minimizing pollution
and runoff. . The goal of BMP has been
changing from collect, convey, store and
treat to retain, attenuate, repair hydrology,
provide water for ecology and add
beauty(aesthetics). For sustainable
rainwater management, BMP should follow
the

eco-mimicry
mimic the nature . Reduce impervious
surface, increase in infiltration, storage and
retain water by vegetation

green spaces and biodiversity conservation

Biodiversity and recreational needs can be
satisfied in accordance with runoff control by
the application of green spaces in the city
 Green Roofs
Green roofs mimic the hydrological
predevelopment of an urban by
collaborating the vegetation layer and
soil on the top of the impervious roof
material When rain events occur, green
roofs collect rainwater. Collected
rainwater can be used for buildings
cooling and insulation and provide
rainwater harvesting

 Porous Pavements

The conventional pavements are not

permeable, which is result in increase of
surface runoff. Porous pavements, which
is alternative to traditional pavements,
allow infiltration.

 Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater harvesting is a simple

promoting alternative to reduce the
amount of surface runoff resulted from
impervious area. The peak flows in
highly concentrated impervious area can
be reduced by collecting runoff from a
roof or other impervious surfaces.

 Rain Gardens

Rain gardens are the planted areas with

trees, shrubs or perennials which receive
the runoff and infiltrate it. Infiltration of
water decreases surface runoff,
increases groundwater recharge and
remove some portion of pollutants.

 Grass Swales
Grass swales are grasses rain channels
that collects surface runoff and direct it
to other stormwater management
systems or conveyance elements. The
advantage of grass swales over
traditional piping system is to slow down
the flow velocity.

 Filter Strips
Filter strips are designed the accept the
flow from upstream development or flow
from highway or a parking lot. The
vegetation layer is helpful for the
removal of pollutant.

 Buffer Zones
The urban environmental sites like park
or open vegetation land along a stream
or lake can act as buffer zone between
the polluting urban area and receiving
water body. These sites also can be used
for recreational purposes like walking
and biking pathways, playgrounds and
picnic area. Buffer zones provide storage
for rainwater and pollution removal.

 Biofilters
Vegetations remove pollutants from
stormwater that is the function of
biofiltration
system. Rain gardens, buffer zones,
grass filter strips, grass swales and
extensive green roofs
are biofilter systems. In order to increase
the removal of heavy metals, nitrogen
and phosphorus,these systems can be
improved with soiled base filtration
system.

 Ponds
Ponds and storage basins have very
important role in stormwater quality
management. A
combination of ponds, wetlands and
infiltration system can result in
sustainable way to manage
stormwater. Generally, ponds
constructed with wetlands. Ponds are not
only a storage system,
but they also can be used for
conveyance system.

 Wetlands
Both natural and artificial wetlands are
used for runoff pollution control.
This is the end of my work. I want to try
a modelling program like stormwater
management model developed by EPA or
Bentley SewerGEMS program for a
spesific region beacuse these programs
enable us to apply LID alternatives.
