CS 213 PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

Unit 1: Elements of Probability


Random Experiment, Sample Space, Mathematical and Statistical definition of Probability,
Theorems of Total and Compound Probability, Conditional Probability and Independent Events,
Baye’s Theorem.

Unit 2: Random Variables


Random Variables and its various Distributions, Probability Mass Function, Probability Density
Function, Mathematical Expectation, Variance and Standard Deviation, Moments and Moment
Generating Functions, Conditional Expectation, Chebyshev’s Inequality, Law of Large Numbers,
Central Limit Theorem.

Unit 3: Probability Distributions


Binomial Distribution, Poisson Distribution, Multinomial Distribution, Hypergeometric
Distribution, Normal Distribution, Beta and Gamma Distribution.

Unit 4: Curve Fitting and Correlation


Principle of Least Squares of Curve Fitting, Linear Regression (simple and multiple), Analysis of
variance for linear regression models.

Unit 5: Sampling Distribution, Theory of Estimation and Test of Hypothesis


Introduction, Various types of Sampling Distributions, Point Estimation, Interval Estimation,
Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Test concerning mean of a Normal Distribution (known and
unknown variance), Tests concerning difference of means, Tests concerning variances and ratio
of variances, the χ 2 test.
